Jazz at Lincoln Center presents the world premiere of Steve Miller: Out of this World with Jimmie Vaughan on Wednesday, April 6 at 7:30pm in Rose Theater, with encore performances on Saturday, April 9 at 7pm and 9:30pm in The Appel Room. A 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Steve Miller hosts Ma Rainey Meets Miles Davis, a wide-ranging musical-and-beyond revue.
A life-long jazz fan who knew stars like Charles Mingus and Les Paul, Miller’s career has spanned more than five decades, starting as one of the top San Francisco blues-rockers during the late ’60s and early ’70s, and later becoming one of the top-selling rock acts of the mid- to late ’70s and early ’80s with hits like “The Joker,” “Fly Like an Eagle,” “Rock’n Me,” and “Abracadabra.”
Ma Rainey Meets Miles Davis promises a dizzying number of surprises and high-level performances. Backed by an all-star jazz quintet, Miller will explore the realms of blues and jazz. He is joined on this journey by special guest guitarist Jimmie Vaughan for these Jazz at Lincoln Center concerts. A founding member of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Vaughan was one of Austin, Texas’ leading guitarists during the late ’70s and ’80s. Influenced by guitarists like Freddie King, B.B. King, and Albert King, Vaughan will add his own blues-rock sensibility to Miller’s.
Pianist Shelly Berg, drummer Eric Harland, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, alto saxophonist Patrick Bartley, and tenor saxophonist Craig Handy provide stellar support to Miller and Vaughan throughout the evening. These concerts will also stream live in high-definition audio and video for free to a global audience via jazz.org/live. Click here for the complete season schedule.
