The world-renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (JLCO) return to the Barbican for their fourth International Associate residency in February 2016. The residency will give an opportunity to experience 15 of America’s finest soloists, ensemble players, and arrangers in jazz music today in concerts, workshops and masterclasses.
A highlight of the residency is a one-night only concert with the iconic saxophonist Wayne Shorter (Thursday 18 February 2016). At 83 years old, Wayne Shorter is ever-present, remaining one of the most transformative figures in music. The ten-time GRAMMY® Award winner will join the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in celebration of his unique and definitive compositions that range from bebop to fusion.
The residency also offers a chance to hear the European premiere of JLCO’s new project: Our Love is Here to Stay – The George Gershwin Songbook (Saturday 20 February 2016), celebrating the music of George Gershwin, one of the most inventive and iconic songwriters of all times, and his significance in American culture. Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra will perform a contemporary feast of jazz-influenced pieces by this giant of American song.
The Young Jazz East Big Band was created for the JLCO’s 2014 residency at the Barbican. This group of 8-16 year olds includes representatives from the East London Music Hubs, who worked with members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and performed at the Barbican Centre during the last residency. The big band now comes together with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Great Britain and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra Big Band Academy to work with JLCO soloists including Vincent Gardner in the lead up to the residency, and the full orchestra during their visit. The young people will be learning about jazz through the music of Duke Ellington and his big band technique, and subsequently perform their own take on his music with musicians from the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra at a concert entitled The Next Generation of Jazz (Friday 19 February 2016).
