Oscar Peñas
Crossroad
Oscar Penas was trained as a classical guitarist in Spain and has since moved to New York City and emerged as a unique voice in jazz. His group has sold out numerous New York clubs and prestigious venues like the Kennedy Center. Though Peñas deservedly attracts fans of great guitar playing, he stands out equally as a composer and bandleader. His fluid combination of jazz traditions with influences including Spanish folk music and Brazilian grooves is both distinct and widely appealing. Peñas’ superb group tonight includes pianist Pete Rende, drummer Richie Barshay, bassist Moto Fukushima (a six-string player with guitar-like flexibility), and Grammy Award-winning harmonica player Gregoire Maret. As a musical and cultural melting pot, this music offers a true New York City experience not to be missed.

Brooklyn Big Band
The 16-piece Brooklyn Big Band performs original big band tunes and fiery arrangements of classics. Founded by saxophonists and composers Craig Bailey and Tim Armacost, whose combined resumes include working with artists ranging from Ray Charles to Art Blakey, the Brooklyn Big Band proudly offers a thrilling mix of spontaneous composition, hard-swinging rhythm, tight ensemble work, and acrobatic solos. The band performs regularly at venues including Sweet Rhythm, Brooklyn’s Tea Lounge, Birdland, and it held a 14-month engagement at Times Square’s Cafe Iguana, known for its dance floor. Silver City Bound & Sammy Miller and the Congregation
Silver City Bound teams up with Sammy Miller and The Congregation in a night of high-energy, feel-good musical celebrating the soul and grit of American music. Silver City Bound – formerly known as the popular “Amigos,” – have been called “Americana at its best” by The Huffington Post, and they deliver an accordion-infused blend of folk, zydeco/cajun, bluegrass, and hot jazz. They have won audiences across the country and partnered up with a diverse array of leading artists. Sammy Miller and the Congregation is a young jazz band on a mission to bring “joyful jazz” to the masses. Led by charismatic drummer Sammy Miller, they perform frequently at the club’s Late Night Dance Sessions and have proven to be one of the liveliest dance bands in town. When these bands share the stage, it will not only be a night of great music, but also a refreshing and social experience.

Mickey Bass and the New York Powerhouse Ensemble
Mickey Bass is a seasoned bassist and composer who excels at straight-ahead jazz and bebop. Bass has worked with such artists as Art Blakey, Charles Mingus, Lee Morgan, and Sonny Rollins, and though he appears less frequently as a bandleader, it’s always a memorable occasion when he does. Back in 1979, his sextet (also featuring tonight’s vibraphonist Steve Nelson) led The New York Times to assert that “it is doubtful if there is a jazz group in town that swing so hard as this one.” He has received similar praise in subsequent decades and has become increasingly recognized as a composer. Bass also has quite a reputation as an educator and mentor who has led and influenced some of the top current artists. This reputation that makes tonight’s New York Powerhouse Ensemble particularly interesting, as it pairs veterans Steve Nelson, Mark Johnson, and Charles Davis with the rapidly ascending saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin.

Joe Farnsworth Prime Time Quartet
Joe Farnsworth is regarded as one of the top jazz drummers in the world, but as far as he is concerned, he is just getting started. He is dedicated to the great tradition of jazz drumming as conceived by artists like Max Roach, Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones, Billy Higgins, and Arthur Taylor, with whom he studied. Farnsworth was introduced to jazz at the age of 12 by his brother, trombonist and saxophonist John Farnsworth. Since then, he has become one of the most respected drummers in the scene, appearing on more than 70 albums with musicians such as Wynton Marsalis, Cedar Walton, Pharoah Sanders, Eric Alexander, and Benny Golson. This performance features a prestigious and highly in-demand band that includes Harold Mabern, Jeremy Pelt and Bob Cranshaw, each a talented leader in his own right.

Mark Sherman Quartet
Mark Sherman is an esteemed vibraphonist and composer who has worked with a wide range of artists, including Tony Bennett, Liza Minnelli, Michael Brecker, Larry Coryell, and Kenny Barron. Sherman is also frequently heard on Broadway in productions like The Lion King and Footloose, as well as in a long list of blockbuster films. Rounding out an already full resume, Sherman is currently on faculty at The Juilliard School and he runs Miles High Records. Audiences tonight will hear why so many artists and industry elites keep selecting Sherman as their trusted vibraphonist, composer, or bandleader. Across these extremely competitive fields, Sherman stands out as an expressive, versatile, and consistently inspiring artist who pushes himself to greatness. Rhythm section features George Cables, Ray Drummond and Carl Allen.

Gotham Kings
A Mardi Gras Celebration
Riley Mulherkar and Alphonso Horne are two of the most prominent and promising young trumpeters in jazz. They make regular appearances at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola thanks to the numerous bandleaders scrambling to hire them, and tonight they co-lead our Mardi Gras celebration. For the festive occasion, they will treat audiences to the infectious sounds of Creole jazz. This concert will showcase the virtuosity of a young Louis Armstrong and the innovative genius of King Oliver, weaving the sounds of New Orleans into a rich musical fabric that uplifts and warms the soul. With special Mardi Gras drinks on the menu, the club will be in good spirits for this special occasion.

Bria Skonberg has earned acclaim as a singer, trumpeter, songwriter, and bandleader. In addition to receiving Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 2015 “Swing! Award,” she has been elected in DownBeat as a Rising Star for the past three years and has earned similar attention as a vocalist. With a style that combines old-school hot jazz with soul, eclectic world percussion, and pop songwriting, Skonberg’s original work has attracted passionate fans and world-class band mates. “One for My Baby”: Antoinette Henry Sings the Great Jazz Standards
Antoinette Henry, a beloved member of the Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola family, also happens to be an extremely gifted vocalist. Heavily influenced by Billie Holiday, Nancy Wilson, Jill Scott, and her own background in theater, Henry brings songs to life with a unique lyrical interpretation and a sincere dedication to storytelling. The repertoire consists of standards from the Great American Songbook, but her versions are far from “standard.” Each song deals with the idea of love, and Henry boldly interprets them with an R&B and Soul edge to share her personal desires and feelings. Given Henry’s longstanding connection to Dizzy’s, expect an extra dose of energy in the room for this exciting performance.

Greg Lewis Organ Monk Quintet

Hammond B3 organist Greg Lewis has so devoted himself to the mastery of his instrument that he is known as an “organ monk.” His “encyclopedic knowledge” of pianist/composer Thelonious Monk’s repertory was seemingly made for the conception of Lewis’ Organ Monk CD trilogy in which he transfers Monk’s compositions (plus a few originals) to the Hammond B3 organ. More than just an all-too-perfect title, the project has received universally rave reviews, noting not only top-notch performances, but also the thoughtful and original treatment of this popular material. Harmonically complex and immediately accessible, classic and freshly inspired, “filthy and graceful” (The New York Times), this is a showcase of wildly successful contradictions not to be missed.

Emmet Cohen Organ Quartet

Still in his 20s, pianist and organist Emmet Cohen is one of the most in-demand musicians in New York City. A finalist in the 2011 Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition and the 2015 American Pianists Association’s Fellowship, Cohen has worked regularly with top artists including Kurt Elling, Herlin Riley, Ali Jackson, and Jimmy Heath. He is also an experienced bandleader and an integral part of New York City’s network of talented young musicians, which includes tonight’s band of Benny Benack III, Tivon Pennicott, and Joe Saylor. Though Cohen makes regular appearances at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, this will be the first time on organ, so old fans and newcomers alike should make sure to catch this special one-set-only performance.

Brandee Younger
Wax & Wane Album Release Co-Presented by Revive Music
Brandee Younger is a genre-defying young harpist with a fresh approach to an already unique instrument. She has worked with such top jazz artists as Ravi Coltrane, Jack DeJohnette, and Reggie Workman, as well as leading hip-hop and R&B artists like Lauryn Hill, Common, Drake, and John Legend. Tonight’s performance celebrates the release of her new album, Wax & Wane, “a testament to her musical forebears [Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane] that fuses classical technique with the persistent groove at the core of the Black music canon.” As recently heard in Younger’s work with Revive Music and Blue Note Records, the repertoire is a serene blend of jazz and genres including funk and hip-hop. Tonight’s band is a combination of upcoming and well-established jazz musicians, each of them versatile enough to compliment Younger’s far-reaching musical explorations.

Akua Allrich
Akua Allrich is an immensely talented vocalist who recently rose to prominence by lighting up the D.C. music scene. After a stint at Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha, Allrich now makes her debut appearance at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. An easy recommendation for a wide range of music fans, Allrich offers an eclectic artistry that is aptly (and perhaps playfully) summarized on her Facebook page as “Jazz + Neo Afro-Soul-blues-reggae-funk-rock-folk music.” Allrich can carry a tune across these many genres with stunning authority, and she also excels at enriching such diverse styles with inventive improvisation and scat solos. With an excellent band that includes Warren Wolf, a regular headliner at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, this show promises to be a thrilling debut.

Joe Chambers is an elite drummer and vibraphonist who has worked with such legends as Charles Mingus, Eric Dolphy, Miles Davis, and Chick Corea, to name a few. A gifted composer as well, Chambers’ music has been performed by artists including Freddie Hubbard and Bobby Hutcherson, and his previous appearance at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola yielded a diverse and critically-acclaimed album of original music. For this performance, Chambers’ band includes the multi-Grammy Award nominated drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria, which means that Chambers’ exceptional skills on the vibraphone will likely be on full display.
