Paquito D’Rivera: Pan-American Fiesta

Continuing our popular annual tradition, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola rings in the new year with artistic visionary Paquito D’Rivera. Fresh off of winning this year’s Best Latin Jazz Album GRAMMY® Award–his 14th award–D’Rivera continues to defy categorization. Not only a virtuoso saxophonist and clarinetist, D’Rivera is a composer whose contributions to Latin jazz and classical music have earned him a Carnegie Hall Lifetime Achievement Award and the status of NEA Jazz Master.

For this festive occasion, D’Rivera’s Quintet will bring its unique brand of fire to the stage, reflecting his passion infusing jazz and bebop with the sounds of Cuban, Brazilian, Venezuelan, Martiniquean, Puerto Rican, Mexican, Austrian, French, and German musical traditions. Though this infectious blend regularly sells out top concert halls in New York City, D’Rivera knows how to channel his talents as a bandleader and composer into the club setting. Music lovers will be hard-tasked to find a more spirited and inspiring way to ring in 2016.

Monday Nights with WBGO: Chantale Gagne
Quebec-born, New York resident Chantal Gagne graces Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola for one night, bringing with her a band of the highest caliber. With her classically informed, jazz-dominant approach, Gagne has long turned heads as a performer and improviser, and over the last decade she has become an increasingly highly regarded composer. Saxophone icon Steve Wilson, a member of tonight’s band, describes her compositions as “not just tunes, but arrangements within tunes, extended compositions with different episodes.” This show is an easy recommendation for any jazz fan, as Gagne’s sets often include expertly swinging standards in addition to her warm and distinctive original pieces.

An authentic and passionate purveyor of classic New Orleans jazz clarinet, Christopher is also an innovator, exploring new nooks within a timeless tradition. To quote The Wall Street Journal: “[Evan Christopher] is one of the world’s major clarinetists, a musician who regards the Crescent City as the uppermost area of the Caribbean and plays accordingly, bringing a Jamaican-Haitian accent to traditional jazz and swing.”

Carlos Henriquez: The Bronx Pyramid

Presented by Blue Engine Records
With 2015’s The Bronx Pyramid, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra bassist Carlos Henriquez made his recording debut as a leader. This record – still charting on Billboard’s jazz charts – solidified the Bronx-born, Nuyorican bassist’s emergence as a fully-fledged Latin jazz master. Across 11 songs, Henriquez expertly blends modern jazz with Latin rhythms, demonstrating why he’s been performing with greats like Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, and Celia Cruz since he was 14. Combining two beautiful traditions, Henriquez and his all-star band offer an infectious set of music that will move fans of either genre.

Ibrahim Maalouf: Kalthoum

Still in his mid-30s, Ibrahim Maalouf has had a monumental career as a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and arranger, offering fresh musical perspectives as he blends jazz and European classical music with the sounds of his native Lebanon and long-time home in France. Maalouf’s masterful use of a custom four-valve, quarter-tone trumpet allows him to incorporate the Arabic melodic modes known as maqams into his genre-blending work, offering rarely heard possibilities that close supposed gaps between Arab and Western worlds. Tonight he brings a carefully selected powerhouse band to pay tribute to Egyptian icon Oum Kalthoum, one of the greatest Arabic divas of all time. Of her beloved hit, “Alf Leila wa Leila,” Maalouf explains, “This piece is one of the all-time classics that is celebrated across the Arab world, and yet it remains virtually unknown in the rest of the world, so this is an opportunity for me to present this symphonic masterpiece.” Maalouf is a gifted arranger full of surprises, and as he proved in 2015 to sold-out crowds at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, this project is a mesmerizing, one-of-a-kind synthesis of cultural traditions. He is joined by a powerhouse ensemble of fellow musicians, including saxophonist Mark Turner, bassist Linda Oh, and drummer Clarence Penn.

The Jakarta, Indonesia native recently released his chart-topping debut album on Motéma, the label of artists including Gregory Porter, Elio Villafranca, and Ginger Baker, to name just a few. His youth makes his technical ability and emotional and improvisational maturity almost startling, but this level of performance would earn the gig at any age.

Matthew Shipp Trio
One-of-a-kind pianist Matthew Shipp returns with his trio to celebrate his latest album, the already-acclaimed The Conduct of Jazz. Shipp is a daring composer and improviser who is well versed in jazz tradition and theory, but also draws from the world of contemporary classical music, leaning towards a modern dissonance that ranges from playful to aggressive. The ensuing moments of clarity and resolution in his music make it all the more stirring thanks to this thoughtful contrast. Tonight’s trio, featuring veteran players Michael Bisio and Newman Taylor Baker, promises a powerful and unpredictable journey through sound that must be heard – and felt – to be understood. Shipp’s music challenges the listener but also makes it impossible to turn away, resulting in a uniquely rewarding and enlightening experience for the audience.

Rene Marie

A feisty, knowing jazz singer with an affinity for Betty Carter, Ella Fitzgerald and Dinah Washington, René Marie made people sit up and listen when she emerged on the scene fully formed in the late 1990s. Although considered a late-bloomer of sorts (beginning her professional singing career at 42) she made critics take note with her recent GRAMMY® Award nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album. On the heels of her sold performances at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in 2015, she returns to captivate audiences with her incredible voice, powerful emotional resonance and fiery independence.

Ramon Valle Trio

Cuban pianist Ramón Valle ‘s repertoire, arrangements, and performance style combine in surprising ways that shed new light on favorite jazz standards, Afro-Cuban traditions, and pop favorites by artists like Stevie Wonder and Leonard Cohen. Some of his originals, too, reveal new possibilities within established and long-loved frameworks. For example, jazz fans will hear the relationship between his burning “Steps in the Night” and John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps,” but to everyone else it will simply be a stunning display of improvisational prowess and the tight group interplay of an obviously inspired trio with bassist Omar Rodriguez Calvo and drummer Liber Torriente.
