New York, NY
(December 02, 2015) —

Jazz at Lincoln Center presents Fred Hersch & Friends: Intimate Moments on Friday & Saturday, January 15 & 16, 2016, at 7:00pm & 9:30pm in The Appel Room. Acclaimed pianist and composer Fred Hersch has put forth some of the most arrestingly beautiful solo and trio projects in the last ten years. He has been called “one of the small handful of brilliant musicians of his generation” by Downbeat, and his music has been praised as “luxurious, free-flowing, unashamedly gorgeous jazz” by New York Times.

From the late 1970s onward, as a sideman to jazz legends including Joe Henderson, Art Farmer, and Stan Getz, he has solidified a reputation as a versatile master of jazz piano, as well as a relentlessly probing composer and conceptualist. In 2006, Hersch set a milestone by becoming the first solo pianist to perform a full weeklong engagement at New York’s legendary Village Vanguard. In 2010, as part of a larger return from a prolonged bout of serious illness that included a two-month coma, Hersch returned to the Village Vanguard for a second solo stint. To date, he has appeared on more than 100 recordings, including more than two dozen albums as bandleader/solo pianist.
For his January concerts in The Appel Room, the ten-time GRAMMY® Award nominee will perform solo and also enlists world-class players to join him for duos. With two pianos on stage, Hersch will perform with his protégé and 2015 Cole Porter Fellowship winner Sullivan Fortner. Additionally, Hersch will perform duos with clarinetist Anat Cohen, guitarist Julian Lage, and the vibraphonist Stefon Harris (who will also perform in a duo with Fortner).
