New York, NY
(December 17, 2015) —

Iconic, innovative saxophonist Charles Lloyd returns to Jazz at Lincoln Center as a 2015 NEA Jazz Master for two nights on Friday & Saturday, January 29 & 30 at 7:00pm & 9:30pm in The Appel Room. Joined by his new quintet The Marvels, Lloyd pairs two of his favorite partners, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland, with two great guitarists—Bill Frisell and Greg Leisz. The Marvels celebrate the release of I Long To See You, the new album from on Blue Note Records which finds the group exploring canonical texts of American music, from “Shenandoah” and “Abide With Me,” to Bob Dylan’s “Masters of War,” and Lloyd classics like “Sombrero Sam,” “Island Blues,” and “Of Course, Of Course.”

From his early association with Calvin Newborn in Memphis, to later collaborations with Gabor Szabo and John Abercrombie, and even his stretch in the 1970s playing with the Beach Boys, Lloyd has long had a deep affinity with the guitar and the multitude of moods and sounds that it brings to his music. The seed for the new project with the Marvels was planted in 2013 when Lloyd played with Frisell at UCLA’s Royce Hall. “We made a connection. I knew we were moving toward the sound. Bill is a great sensitive and very intuitive,” said Lloyd of his collaboration with Frisell. “When he was a kid in Denver, he told me he was influenced by my first band with Jack DeJohnette and Keith Jarrett. He said that music opened his imagination to a wide spectrum of new possibilities. We don’t need to say much when we get together—it’s all expressed in the music, in the sound, the feeling.”

As for adding Leisz into the mix, Lloyd says, “When I knew that Greg was going to be in town during our L.A. concert, I asked him to sit in with us. He and Bill are like two sides of a coin, so amazing things happened during that concert.” Lloyd also praises his consistent sidemen Harland and Rogers, saying: “Eric and Reuben are one of the continuous fibers of continuity in my music; they understand. We have been together for over a decade and it continues to bloom.”
