Etienne Charles Presents: Creole Christmas
2015 Guggenheim Fellow Etienne Charles returns to celebrate another holiday at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. Charles has recently led an exciting series of Creole music-themed projects, including his #1 chart-topping 2013 album, Creole Soul. Using jazz as a foundation to engage 20th century Caribbean folk and pop traditions, his powerful band incorporates musical elements from Trinidad, Jamaica, Haiti, and Martinique in a fluid blend of jazz tradition, rhythms of the Caribbean, and an emphasis on the Afro-Caribbean history of calypso music. Across original compositions and new arrangements of classics, Charles’ repertoire is always diverse, carefully selected, and handled with care and originality. Shake off the winter blues with us and warm up with a Creole Christmas.

Allan Harris: Love Came, The Songs of Strayhorn featuring the Eric Reed Trio
The award-winning Allan Harris is a Brooklyn-born, Harlem-raised vocalist, guitarist, and composer who has performed across the world, including at the 2012 London Olympics. He recently joined us to celebrate the release of his wildly diverse Black Bar Jukebox album, and this week he takes on the music of Billy Strayhorn, one of the greatest jazz composers of all time. His band for the series, the inimitable Eric Reed Trio, is a perfect fit for such a program; carrying on the jazz torch kindled by such geniuses as Strayhorn, Eric Reed is a leading contributor to the lineage of highly refined swinging jazz. This former member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra has recorded over 20 albums as a leader, first toured and recorded with Wynton Marsalis at age 18, and continues to work with some of the world’s top jazz luminaries. Much like the late, great Billy Strayhorn, Harris and the Eric Reed Trio are class acts who–with cunning and integrity–balance the importance of both individuality and tradition.

Marquis Hill Quintet
Trumpeter Marquis Hill, already a local hero in Chicago, has gained even more recognition throughout the jazz world since winning the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition in 2014. Still a regular headliner in Chicago, Hill recently moved to New York City to learn from a new scene, and also because he “just want[s] to play with everyone.” An in-demand performer, that’s exactly what he’s been doing, but Hill also leads a regular quintet, a group with a tightly knit sound representative of their considerable performance experience. Hill’s music is soulful and well-composed jazz that incorporates elements of Chicago and New York, sometimes including elements of R&B and hip-hop. With original compositions that boast memorable melodies, exciting solos, and a kinetic, irresistibly propulsive rhythm section, this group is an easy recommendation for classic jazz fans as well as anyone interested in the contemporary fusions increasingly being explored by young, genre-crossing composers.

New York Youth Symphony: Classically Inspired
With Special Guest Robin Eubanks
The New York Youth Symphony’s Jazz Band is considered by many to be one of the best ensembles of its kind. The members of this group range from age 12 to 22, making the quality of their sound even more astonishing. In an effort to preserve jazz traditions and styles, the ensemble focuses on the music of the 1930s and 1940s big band orchestras in addition to contemporary pieces. While celebrating the heritage of jazz, the group also values a progressive, emerging new sound. This show offers an exciting glimpse at the future of jazz, led by some of the most talented young musicians in the New York area–not to mention special guest Robin Eubanks, an enormously talented and endlessly award-winning trombonist and composer.

A longtime member of the extended Jazz at Lincoln Center family, Andy Farber is a dedicated saxophonist, composer, arranger, bandleader, and conductor who has performed each of these roles with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, not to mention dozens of other leading names throughout the jazz, pop, and symphonic orchestra worlds. Tonight, he leads his Orchestra, a 17-piece swinging big band stacked with top ensemble players and soloists. The band carries forward the timeless tradition of big band jazz, demonstrating its ongoing relevance and powerful versatility.

For the third year in what is sure to be a long tradition, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola welcomes back the vocal trio of Michael Mwenso, Brianna Thomas, and Charenee Wade for a high-energy holiday celebration, featuring new takes on classic holiday favorites. Mwenso, Thomas, and Wade perform together regularly with a devilish and highly entertaining chemistry, sharing the stage or taking turns throughout the show. The band consists of rising star musicians who have worked extensively with Mwenso in particular, helping them keep up with whatever twists and turns he inevitably throws their way. This young collective of New York jazz stars have repeatedly joined forces to prove that they deliver not just some of the best playing in town, but also one of the most varied and all-around entertaining shows in the city.

Juilliard Jazz Ensembles
The Juilliard School has been a destination for world-class music education since its founding, and these incredible young musicians will exemplify that legacy once again at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. The Juilliard Jazz Ensembles feature some of the world’s most talented emerging jazz artists, many of whom are already professional musicians, and they are taught by today’s most active, innovative, and respected jazz musicians. No stranger to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, the Jazz Ensembles have also performed at noted venues such as the Blue Note and Alice Tully Hall. These gifted young musicians are proof of jazz’s bright future, and for the past several seasons, they have performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center with guest artists such as Ernie Andrews, Kenny Barron, Tom Harrell, Sean Jones, Lew Tabackin, Gerald Wilson, Bobby Watson, and Frank Wess.

Ed Reed Trio with special guest George Cables
Ed Reed, 86-year-old vocalist and 2014’s #1 Rising Star Male Vocalist (DownBeat magazine Critics Poll), has been singing for his entire life, and he finally got around to recording his first album in 2007, just before his 78th birthday. He has since recorded several critically acclaimed albums, and his success is a well-deserved and ongoing inspiration. Tonight’s top-notch rhythm section features iconic pianist George Cables, an important voice in jazz for the last five decades. Both artists perform with passion and sincerity, and tonight’s show will be a swinging and uplifting affair.

Led by energetic drummer Sherrie Maricle, DIVA exudes the excitement and force found in the historic big band tradition. With New York as their home base, DIVA performs all over the world, playing contemporary, mainstream big band jazz composed and arranged to fit the individual personalities and styles of the musicians themselves. Audiences can expect an explosive performance packed with unique improvisation, spontaneity, and an emphasis on fun. Tonight’s show features vocalists Camille Thurman, Christine Fawson, and Sue Giles, as the Orchestra sings and swings selections from Ella Fitzgerald’s classic 1960 Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas.

Monday Nights with WBGO: Dick Hyman Solo Piano (12/21/15)

For two nights in the club, legendary pianist Dick Hyman will treat audiences to intimate solo performances. Hyman’s career includes a nearly encyclopedic output of over 100 albums under his name, ranging from original piano and orchestral works, to interpretations of classic American music, ragtime, and variants of stride piano. The 88-year-old pianist is rumored to never miss a note, and while that in no way defines his art, the rumor’s mere existence in the context of such demanding music speaks volumes of his technical mastery. This is a chance to see America’s greatest music performed at the highest level by a living legend. Ted Rosenthal Trio: “Wonderland” Holiday Show
Ted Rosenthal, a Long Island native, first gained international acclaim by winning the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition in 1988. Since then, Rosenthal has made 15 recordings as a leader and performed with Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Bob Brookmeyer, and more. Following memorable performances of their holiday album Wonderland in 2013 and 2014 at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, the Ted Rosenthal Trio returns for another holiday celebration. The repertoire is a showcase of Rosenthal’s skills as an arranger and the trio’s impeccable musicianship, and their reinterpretations leave intact the timelessness of the best known Christmas songs. So get out of the cold, stop by Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, and get in the holiday spirit while admiring the nighttime views of Columbus Circle.
