The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis play the music of Thelonious Monk on Friday & Saturday, October 23 & 24, 2015, 8pm at The Town Hall (123 W 43rd St, New York), continuing Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 2015-16 season with this limited engagement at one of New York City’s premiere cultural venues. The orchestra is joined by special guest pianists Joey Alexander and Brad Mehldau.
One of the creators of modern jazz, renowned both for his compositions and his playing, Thelonious Sphere Monk (1917 – 1982) performed and recorded in a wide range of musical settings—from solo to big band—with many of jazz’s greatest musicians, including John Coltrane, Coleman Hawkins, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey, and Max Roach. Many of his more than 60 compositions are jazz classics. Though often misunderstood during his lifetimes, Monk is today widely regarded as a genius composer of uncompromising creativity.
While many musicians hesitate when faced with Monk’s ‘fast-thinking’ music, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will perform their own arrangements of Monk tunes, including new arrangements created especially for these concerts, including “Brilliant Corners”, “Epistrophy”, “Light Blue”, “We See”, “Skippy”, “Ugly Beauty”, and “Monk’s Mood”.
Tickets for ‘Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis Plays Monk’ at The Town Hall can be purchased through jazz.org 24 hours a day or via CenterCharge at 212-721-6500, open daily from 10am to 9pm.
