Fall concerts at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola kick into high gear during the months of October and November. Much-anticipated performances and celebrations with artists and legends Cyrus Chestnut, John Handy, Bobby Sanabria, Joe Temperley, and George Wein enliven the club.
The Israeli Jazz Festival returns on October 28 and 29, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Etienne Charles bring his Calypso Masquerade Ball to the stage for a spooky Halloween performance on October 31, and the always-soulful Wycliffe Gordon commences the holiday season for the club’s annual Thanksgiving day celebration on November 26.
As part of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s major renovation of Frederick P. Rose Hall’s, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and the Irene Diamond Education Center will be closed from November 1 -16, reopening on November 17. Gregory Generet
Vocalist Gregory Generet is relatively new to the scene, but you’d never guess it after hearing the confident elegance in his voice. His repertoire focuses on well-known classics, but the result is far from routine; on Generet’s debut album, he performs swinging jazz standards like “How High The Moon” and “Stolen Moments,” rides the Brazilian grooves of “Rio de Janeiro Blues,” delivers a standout interpretation of Ellington’s “Caravan,” and even includes an urgent and passionate version of Van Morrison’s “Moondance,” in which his emotions soar over the peaks and valleys of the band’s dynamic arrangement. This show is recommended on a purely musical basis, but it will also stand out to listeners who enjoy great lyrics brought to life by a singer who internalizes and projects them with sincerity.

Antonio Sanchez and Migration
Since arriving in New York City in the late 1990s, Antonio Sanchez has proven himself as a powerhouse to watch and remember. Extracting an incredible array of colors from the drums, Sanchez defies nature with extraordinary dynamic shifts, subtle colorations, metric super-impositions, and streamlined clave patterns. Sanchez not only dazzles with herculean technique, but he also swings, as is heard with his own bands, on the soundtrack for Academy Award “Best Picture” winner Birdman (which Sanchez both composed and recorded), and with such artists as Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Gary Burton, and Pat Metheny. The Grammy Award-winning Turtle Island Quartet is a truly one-of-a-kind string quartet. Equally proficient as jazz quartet as they are contemporary chamber ensemble, they blur those lines and more while rewriting the rules of classical and modern improvised music. Combining virtuosic, seemingly limitless technique and classical concepts with the flexibility, risk-taking, and modern theory of the great jazz improvisers, the Turtle Island Quartet obscures the usefulness of such genre distinctions. Their consistently diverse and rapidly expanding repertoire has included original compositions as well as arrangements of such composers as Dizzy Gillespie, Wayne Shorter, Jimi Hendrix, Vivaldi, and John Coltrane. Tonight’s brand new program, Jelly, Rags, and Monk, features jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut, called “the best jazz pianist of his generation” by Time magazine. Leny Andrade and Roni Ben-Hur
Leny Andrade is an internationally acclaimed vocalist whom Tony Bennett calls the “Ella Fitzgerald of Brazil.” Her voice is huge and expressive, refreshingly raw and yet always in control. Her partner tonight, Roni Ben-Hur, is a formidable guitarist and a favorite of New York City musicians. Like Andrade, Ben-Hur has deep musical roots in both jazz and the music of Brazil. The duo has performed in public only a few times, and earlier this year they recorded their debut album, the release of which we celebrate tonight. Join us for an intimate performance while this collaboration, now including a Brazilian rhythm section of Itaiguara Brandão and Helio Schiavo, is still somewhat of a “hidden gem.”

Alain Bédard is a prominent Canadian bassist returning to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola for the first time in years. His Auguste Quintet, performing tonight, plays hard-swinging bop with rich, quirky twists and turns reminiscent of Thelonious Monk, an acknowledged influence and subject of exploration for Bédard. The group’s Monk-esque compositions (contributed by various members) are greasy, thickly textured, and serve as excellent platforms for expressive improvisation. They also groove hard, so the audience gets to settle into each piece while still enjoying the surprises. Also worth noting is Bédard’s role as co-founder of Effendi, an important independent jazz label in Canada, demonstrating his deep commitment to the music.

Singer-accordionist Gregorio Uribe leads a big band of top New York Latin jazz musicians to celebrate cumbia and other tropical and danceable rhythms from Colombia. This big band is irresistibly upbeat and danceable with rhythmic acrobatics performed by a world-class percussion section. Uribe, a spirited and charismatic front-man, sings, dances, plays percussion, and makes some delightful contributions on accordion that might be new territory for many jazz audiences. Ignacio Berroa Celebrates Dizzy Gillespie with special guest Jon Faddis
This evening marks 99 years of Dizzy Gillespie, and we could not be in better company for the celebration. Ignacio Berroa, tonight’s leader, moved to New York in 1980 and joined Gillespie’s quartet in 1981, remaining the drummer of multiple Gillespie bands until his passing in 1993. Berroa is widely regarded as a master drummer in jazz, Afro-Cuban, and the many fusions in between. Joining Berroa will be legendary trumpeter Jon Faddis, protégé of Dizzy Gillespie. Known for having an extraordinary and virtually unparalleled range, Faddis has complete mastery over the trumpet. He evokes the voices of Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Roy Eldridge, and, of course, Gillespie, all while remaining true to his own. Berroa and Faddis are both intimately experienced with Gillespie’s music, and they exemplify the quality and musical courage for which Gillespie was known.

John Handy Quintet
50th Anniversary of Live at Monterey Jazz Festival
John Handy’s performance at the 1965 Monterey Jazz Festival was an unprecedented sensation. Brave, free, and unique, the set is considered a high point of improvisation and an essential listen amongst aficionados. The entire set is comprised of two lengthy, wholly captivating pieces full of extended solos on saxophone, guitar, violin, bass, and drums. From the opening minutes to the fiery climax, the music transports the listener, instilling a sense of wonder that remains palpable today. Recordings of the original performance have thankfully been reissued, but it will be a special privilege not only to hear this material in person, but to experience it with an audience almost unthinkably intimate compared to the Monterey crowd that gave Handy such thunderous applause 50 years ago.

Monday Nights with WBGO: Ben Williams & Sound Effect
Coming of Age
Ben Williams is widely recognized as a leading upright and electric bassist, especially after winning the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in 2009. In great demand as a sideman, Williams is a regular at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola alongside a wide range of groups. Tonight, he makes his debut as a leader, showcasing original music from his excellent second album, Coming of Age. Stylistically, his writing is a powerful combination of post-bop and R&B and gospel-infused jazz. The music tackles some deep themes and emotions, but the band is clearly having a good time playing it together, and in the end, beauty and a sense of uplift stick with the listener. Williams’ formidable Sound Effect group features Marcus Strickland, Christian Sands, Gilad Hekselman, and John Davis, some of the top names in town.

Chilean tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana made history in 2013 as the first female instrumentalist to win 1st place in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. After receiving the Berklee Presidential Scholarship in 2007 and graduating from Berklee College of Music in 2009, Aldana moved to New York City, where she quickly became a part of its jazz scene. She has performed at venues like the Village Vanguard, Blue Note, Iridium, Smalls, Birdland, and in 2014–at age 24–celebrated the release of her third album at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. Aldana’s career is rapidly and deservedly taking off as both a prolific leader and band member of top groups. Israeli Jazz Festival
Tel Aviv-born guitarist Yotam Silberstein had already won the coveted “Israeli Jazz Player of The Year” title at the age of 21. Soon after, he performed at Italy’s renowned Umbria Jazz Festival, released a critically acclaimed debut album, and set out on an extensive tour of Europe and the Middle East. Upon receiving a scholarship to attend The New School in 2005, Silberstein moved to New York City and has since performed with such luminaries as James Moody, The Heath Brothers, and Paquito D’Rivera. It’s notoriously challenging for a jazz guitarist to climb the ranks like Silberstein, and it speaks to a high and multifaceted level of artistry to earn such acclaim at this speed. Oran Etkin’s Re-imagining Benny Goodman: 80 Years of Swing
Multi-instrumentalist Oran Etkins is known for digging deeply into the sounds of various eras and locations, reimagining them in his own voice. In the 1930s–40s, swing dominated American popular music, and for Reimagining Benny Goodman, Etkin channels the “King of Swing” and celebrates several important milestones. Alongside vibraphonist Steve Nelson and drummer Matt Wilson, two top instrumentalists, Etkin pays homage to one of the first integrated jazz quartets to tour the country. The group will also celebrate the 80th anniversary of the historic Palomar Ballroom concert that ushered in a new musical era. These sets will be great for both newcomers and longtime jazz fans.

Dominick Farinacci: Short Stories
When Quincy Jones first saw Dominick Farinacci perform, he famously said: “This kid is 360 degrees!” The 32-year-old trumpeter has been further endorsed by Wynton Marsalis and has released nine records to date. Every aspect of his talent has received its due praise—from his succinct, melodic phrasing, to his highly expressive tone and strong chops. Though best known for (and most interested in) beautiful, patient melodies at times reminiscent of late ‘50s – early ‘60s Miles Davis, Farinacci still knows how to swing fast, rip through the blues, or branch out with aspects of Latin percussion.
