Reaching out into the boroughs, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 2015-16 season opens in the Bronx on September 12, 2015, 8pm at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts with the debut of new compositions and arrangements by Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra bassist Carlos Henriquez. The Bronx-born, Nuyorican veteran bassist of the orchestra returns home to honor his musical roots, joined by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. The orchestra will also be joined by special guests percussionists Bobby Allende and Marc Quiñones.
One of the first truly bilingual musicians, equally virtuosic with the language of jazz and the Afro-Latin tradition, Henriquez is a force to be reckoned with. By age 14, he was performing at People’s Park, across the street from his high school, with Latin jazz greats like Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, and Celia Cruz, and as a member of the first ever top-placing Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Festival and Competition band. Henriquez’ roots with Jazz at Lincoln Center run deep, and to kick off the new season, he brings Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra back to the Bronx for this very special one-night-only performance at Lehman Center.
Henriquez presents music that shows the breadth of his technical and stylistic dexterity, where his compositions and most notable arrangements will be front and center. A musical director for countless performances, including the orchestra’s historic trip to Cuba in 2010, three nights of sold-out concerts with salsa giant Rubén Blades in November 2014, and critically acclaimed concerts celebrating the music of Puente and Machito in June 2015, Henriquez is a truly homegrown talent, both of the Bronx and of Jazz at Lincoln Center.
