Joe Temperley and Wessell “Warmdaddy” Anderson
This weekend, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola features two saxophone legends on one stage. Joe Temperley – founding member and elder statesman of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) – is one of the best saxophonists in the world, who has seen it all during a career with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Joe Henderson, and many more. Co-starring is Brooklyn native – and former long-time member of both the Wynton Marsalis Septet and the JLCO – saxophone giant Wessell “Warmdaddy” Anderson. Three first-call veteran artists hold down the rhythm section in support of “Warmdaddy” and living legend Joe Temperley.

Dan Nimmer Trio
Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) pianist Dan Nimmer has prodigious technique and an innate sense of swing that often recalls his own heroes – Oscar Peterson, Wynton Kelly, Erroll Garner, and Art Tatum. Nimmer joined the JLCO at age 23, as the youngest member in its history, and he’s released multiple albums as a leader with the Dan Nimmer Trio. Three of those albums feature David Wong and Pete Van Nostrand, tonight’s featured musicians. The group’s extensive joint experience, plus individually prolific careers as some of the busiest players in New York, makes them a highly refined straight-ahead trio.

Juilliard Jazz Orchestra: The Music of Duke Ellington
The Juilliard School has been a destination for world-class music education since its founding, and these incredible young musicians will exemplify that legacy at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. The Juilliard Jazz Orchestra features some of the world’s most talented emerging jazz artists, many of whom are already professional musicians, and they are taught by today’s most active, innovative, and respected jazz musicians. No stranger to this club, the Orchestra has also performed at noted venues such as the Blue Note and Alice Tully Hall.

Jeff Hamilton Trio
Drummer Jeff Hamilton is known as a bandleader, a co-leader of the Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra, and as a sideman for such artists as Ray Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, Monty Alexander, and Diana Krall. Tonight, he leads his regular trio, featuring pianist Tamir Hendelman and bassist Christoph Luty. The trio performs original compositions by each member, plus tunes by Thelonious Monk, Ray Brown, and the occasional (and wholly rewritten) pop hit. Hamilton is regarded as a master drummer, and his trio is a sure bet for fans of hard-swinging, straight-ahead jazz.

The Flail
The Flail is a New York City-based jazz quintet from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Since its inception in 2001, the Flail has focused on developing a group sound, with each member enjoying an equal voice in composition and improvisation. This flexible attitude is highlighted in all aspects of their music, which covers an incredible amount of stylistic ground. Their original compositions boast intricate, weaving forms, daring solos, and a wide range of ideas and grooves that are brought together seamlessly to create the fresh sound of this globally touring group which features Dan Blankinship on trumpet, Stephan Moutot on tenor saxophone, Brian Marsella on piano, Reid Taylor on bass, and Charles Goold on drums.

Eva Cortes: In Bloom
Vocalist Eva Cortés graces Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola to perform music from In Bloom, a luscious album originally released in Spain in 2013 and recently re-released in 2015 by New York City’s Truth Revolution Records. Cortés is a remarkable singer in both Spanish and English, performing a range of originals, rarities, and standards with a deep, full-bodied voice, a penchant for improvisation, and an excellent band that easily shares the spotlight. Cortés is joined by Romain Collin, piano; Mike Moreno, guitar; Luques Curtis, bass; and Richie Barshay, drums.

Mike Rodriguez Quintet
In addition to performances with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and co-leading the Rodriguez Brothers with his brother Robert, trumpeter Mike Rodriquez has performed and toured with Clark Terry, Quincy Jones, Carla Bley, Harry Connick Jr., Eddie Palmieri, and countless more. Rodriguez has also worked extensively with Charlie Haden, including on his GRAMMY® Award-winning Land of the Sun. Through these diverse experiences, Rodriguez has developed a serious reputation as a formidable soloist and a composer of straight-ahead, post-bop, and Latin jazz.

The Music of Wayne Shorter: The Early Years
Featuring Stacy Dillard, Tivon Pennicott, and Julian Lee on saxophones with pianist Sullivan Fortner, bassist and Musical Director Russell Hall, and drummer Evan Sherman, these young musicians will explore Wayne Shorter’s pivotal role in two of jazz’s most renowned small groups. The group will showcase Shorter’s contributions in the late 1950s as a member of, and eventually primary composer for, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, and his first albums with Veejay Records from 1959 to 1962. Dance and theater artists Jules Latimer, Jimmie “JJ” Jeter, and Brandon Hall also join the ensemble.

Ingrid Jensen’s Berklee Quintet
Since her early days of playing in the subways and parks of New York City, Ingrid Jensen has become a world renowned trumpeter and a leading post-bop composer. Jensen is annually listed as a top five Talent Deserving Wider Recognition by DownBeat magazine, but she has also performed as a leader and featured soloist around the world, from Canada to Japan, Australia, South America, South Africa, the Caribbean, and in almost every country in Europe and Scandinavia. Monday Nights with WBGO: Ibrahim Maalouf
Kalthoum
Ibrahim Maalouf is only 34 years old, but he has already had a monumental career as a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and arranger in jazz, classical, and “world” music. In 2014, Maalouf won Best World Artist at the French Music Awards, and his most recent album as a leader was No. 1 on the French jazz charts for more than four months. Tonight, he and his carefully selected powerhouse band pay tribute to one of the greatest Arabic divas of all time, Oum Kalthoum.
Of “Alf Leila wa Leila,” one of Kalthoum’s greatest hits, Maalouf explains, “This piece is one of the all-time classics that is celebrated across the Arab world, and yet it remains virtually unknown in the rest of the world. So this was an opportunity for me to present this symphonic masterpiece, which celebrates the voice of the Arab world’s most popular singer.” Maalouf is a gifted arranger full of surprises.
