On March 6 – 7, Jazz at Lincoln Center celebrates the legacy of iconic vocalist Betty Carter in Salute to Betty Carter featuring drummer and music director Alvester Garnett and vocalist Charenee Wade. Carter, who would have turned 85 this year, blazed her own trail as one of the most original jazz vocalists of our time. Her flawless phrasing, uncanny unpredictability, and signature glissando placed her in a league of her own as a true “musician’s singer.”
Garnett, joined by other past members of Betty Carter’s band including saxophonist Craig Handy, pianists Jacky Terrasson and Stephen Scott, bassists Michael Bowie and Curtis Lundy, and drummer Winard Harper will share memories of his first touring experience with Carter, performing some of her trademark tunes including “What A Little Moonlight Can Do” and “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”
Rising star jazz vocalist, Charenee Wade interprets the music of one of jazz’s foremost mentors, and one of her idols. Wade, praised as a “captivating vocalist…freewheeling, funny, and persuasive” by The New York Times, was first runner-up in the prestigious Thelonious Monk Jazz Vocal Competition in 2010 and was one of a choice few selected to participate in Carter’s Jazz Ahead program. Rounding out the performance will be three tap dancers The New York Times calls “adept and powerful” and “rhythmically authoritative” who recently paid tribute to Betty Carter in a performance at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola: Alexandria Brinae Bradley, Frances Monique Bradley, and Michela Marino Lerman.
Salute to Betty Carter takes place on Friday, March 6 and Saturday, March 7 at 7:30pm and 9:30pm in The Appel Room, located at Broadway at 60th Street in New York, New York. Pre-concert discussions are free for ticketholders and begin at 6pm and 8:30pm. Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Salute to Betty Carter will stream live in high-definition audio and video for free to a global audience via jazz.org/live. The concert will also be available on Livestream’s mobile and connected TV applications with real-time DVR, chat, photos, and other materials available to fans worldwide.
