From the legendary Pharoah Sanders, to the soulful Marcus Roberts and the child prodigy Joey Alexander, the club stage will be filled with unforgettable sounds. Now, visitors to the new jazz.org/dizzys are also treated to an optimized, media-rich and user-friendly website when exploring the club’s offerings and making online reservations.
Enhanced with an eye towards the user experience, the new site builds upon a foundation of current best practices in the industry. Notable functional changes include a brand new reservation bar that allows visitors to quickly and easily make reservations by selecting the day and set time they prefer. Designed as well from a “mobile first” perspective, the site is also quick, clean and easy to use on tablets. Peter Bernstein, DownBeat’s 2014 #1 Rising Star Guitarist, is a real musician’s guitarist, with maturity, impeccable feel, and a sound comparable to straight-ahead favorites like Jim Hall and Wes Montgomery. Bernstein will be joined by GRAMMY®-award winning pianist and keyboardist Brad Mehldau, a Berklee College of Music peer. Holding down the rhythm is drummer Greg Hutchinson, named “the drummer of his generation” by JazzTimes. And if that trio isn’t enough, a very special guest will be joining the group on bass.

Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Jazz Orchestra with Sean Jones
Now in its seventh year, the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Jazz Orchestra has established itself as a premier collegiate all-star big band. The group is returning to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola for its annual performance, and this year’s featured conductor-performer is former Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra trumpeter Sean Jones. All undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for this elite band (upon receiving a nomination from an instructor), and the final lineup is selected by a committee of Cumberland Jazz Society members. This year, the band will perform a variety of selections from the contemporary big band library.

Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra
The Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra (JLCYO) consists of 20 talented and dedicated high school students in the tri-state area. Members have the opportunity to enhance their musical education with the finest professional training and performance opportunities. The JLCYO rehearses weekly in the state-of-the-art Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. During these rehearsals, students learn big band repertoire and performance techniques from JLCYO Director Vincent Gardner, as well as members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Join us to support young jazz musicians and hear some of the most dedicated up-and-comers.

Marcus Roberts’ Modern Jazz Generation
with an opening set by Joey Alexander (solo, 7pm each night)*
On the heels of his sold out performances in The Appel Room last September, Marcus Roberts is bringing his Modern Jazz Generation group to the club. The prodigious Roberts, recently featured on CBS “60 Minutes”, has a long history of treasuring the tenets of jazz through his work, which for the last quarter century has epitomized preservation through innovation. Since his Jazz at Lincoln Center debut in 1987, his presence has been deeply significant, and his recorded and commissioned works have honored some of his most revered predecessors of the piano. For this project, Marcus Roberts and The Modern Jazz Generation pay tribute to Jelly Roll Morton, Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver, and Chick Corea.
The 11-year-old piano prodigy Joey Alexander will present a solo set at 7pm every night. The jaw-dropping young talent just signed a record deal with Motéma, the label of artists like Gregory Porter, Elio Villafranca, and Ginger Baker, to name a few. As Wynton Marsalis noted last year: “Joey is a little genius, just 10 years old, and playing with emotional depth like a young adult.”

Pianist Eli Yamin and clarinetist Evan Christopher celebrate the music and spirit of Sidney Bechet, Duke Ellington, Mary Lou Williams and more. Yamin and Christopher look back to a time when jazz was alive with visceral sensation. This is the music of a day gone by, reinvigorated for a new generation. It honors the past, not by copying, but by building on what had been done, and with an eye toward making everything old new again.

Christian Sands Trio
Christian Sands is only 25 years old, but he has been playing piano for the past 24 years, garnering GRAMMY® Award nominations, including Best Latin Jazz Piano Solo. Wynton Marsalis named him a “jazz star of the future,” and he holds a coveted position in Christian McBride’s trio. Tonight’s show will feature Matthew Rybicki and Ulysses Owens, Jr (who also featured Sands on his latest album) performing a combination of originals and standards. Sands’ stylistic range includes stride piano, swing, bebop, progressive jazz, fusion, Brazilian, and Afro-Cuban, so expect to hear a versatile set performed by some rising jazz stars, all of whom are newly recorded bandleaders as well as prolific sidemen.

Rene Urtreger Trio

Rene Urtreger has enjoyed a long and successful career, spanning more than six decades. In the 1950s, Urtreger played with Don Byas and Buck Clayton at age 20. A few years later, he spent time in the groups of both Lester Young and Miles Davis. That same decade, he worked with Lionel Hampton, Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, and Ben Webster. Jazz fans know the extraordinary significance of this history; but for those new to Urtreger, here is an opportunity to see the storied pianist who continues to receive awards for his involvement in the arts.
Born in 1960 in Paris, and now an American citizen, self-taught pianist Jean-Michel Pilc has performed with numerous giants in the music field such as Roy Haynes, Michael Brecker, Martial Solal, Kenny Garrett, Lenny White, Chris Potter, John Abercrombie, Mingus Dynasty & Big Band, Lew Soloff, Richard Bona and many others. He has also worked with Harry Belafonte, as his musical director and pianist. Pilc moved to New York City in 1995 where he formed a popular trio with bassist François Moutin and drummer Ari Hoenig. In 2013, he received a prestigious fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in the Music Composition category. In November 2014, he also released What Is This Thing Called?, his third solo album and first release for Sunnyside Records.

Clarice Assad/OFF THE CLIFF
Clarice Assad, a Jazz at Lincoln Center favorite, returns to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola after a spectacular performance in The Appel Room during our 2013-14 season. A prolific composer and virtuosic pianist and vocalist, Assad and her “ancient-to-future” group OFF THE CLIFF ensure that there is never a dull moment. The group mixes Brazilian jazz and pop with a massive array of other styles–some beyond definition–and incorporates different combinations of instruments in each song so that they “never sound the same.” OFF THE CLIFF includes percussionist Keita Ogawa, originally from Nagasaki, Japan; and guitarist, João Luiz Rezende of São Paulo, Brazil. Special guests include Beat Kaestli on vocals and Shin Sakain on bass.

Walter Blanding: Tick Tock
Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra saxophonist Walter Blanding brings his unrecorded composition “Tick Tock” to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. Originally commissioned for the Savannah Music Festival 2013, the piece received rave reviews, drawing comparisons to the work of Wayne Shorter for its sophisticated compositional value and utilization of brilliant soloists. Blanding has been a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra since 1998 and has performed, toured and/or recorded with his own groups and with such renowned artists as the Cab Calloway Orchestra, Roy Hargrove, Hilton Ruiz, Count Basie Orchestra, Illinois Jacquet Big Band, Wycliffe Gordon, Marcus Roberts, Wynton Marsalis Quintet, Isaac Hayes, and many other notable artists in the jazz horizon.

Takeshi Obayashi and Ulysses Owens, Jr’s New Century Jazz Quintet is a hybrid of some of the most talented Japanese and American musicians, playing music steeped in the jazz tradition, but with a modern approach. Conceived with the idea that this is a new day and time, echoing Dizzy Gillespie’s sentiment of having one foot in the past and one in the future, the band also features saxophonist Tim Green, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, and special guest trombonist Mike Dease for its Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola debut.

Papo Vazquez Mighty Pirates Troubadours
NEA Latino Master Papo Vazquez is a visionary composer, trombonist, singer, and percussionist, whose eclectic output includes jazz, Afro-Caribbean, classical, and a wide spectrum of Latin music, sometimes performed individually, and sometimes in combination. This diverse, often theatrical repertoire is brought to life by the Mighty Pirates Troubadours band, which masterfully navigates Vazquez’ journey through Latin dance grooves, extended jazz improvisations, and slow, lushly orchestrated passages. With a special emphasis on Latin jazz, this performance at the club will demonstrate just how hard this award-winning band can groove.

Carlos Henriquez
Bassist and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra member Carlos Henriquez, hailing from the Bronx, New York, has shared stages with Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Eddie Palmieri, Ruben Blades, Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, Bobby Cruz, and a host of greats from various genres. OWL Trio
OWL Trio, featuring Orlando le Fleming, Will Vinson, and Lage Lund, has received wildly enthusiastic praise for its debut album, released in 2013. A common thread is the concept of “intimacy,” not surprising given their percussion-less trio format that builds energy as much through restraint and subtlety as overt flair. While in no way inaccessible or overly scholarly sounding, the loose, often spare arrangement of the music infinitely reward close, attentive listening, and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola will be a special venue in which to witness this new project.

Jackie McLean was a man of high principles and someone with an uncompromising love for the American art form known as jazz. The Jackie McLean Institute jazz ensembles (of the University of Hartford) are instructed by widely recognized jazz artists Javon Jackson, Steve Davis, René McLean, Nat Reeves, Abraham Burton, and Chris Casey. Students work closely with accomplished faculty members through individual mentorship toward success as a professional jazz performer. Through performance, these talented students explore the rich history of ever-evolving jazz styles and learn the full spectrum of skills necessary for a career in jazz. Jacques Schwarz-Bart presents Jazz Racine Haiti
Jacques Schwarz-Bart is a France-born, New York-based jazz saxophonist whose music often defies category. While his first instrument was the Gwoka drums from Guadeloupe, his mother’s native country, he discovered the tenor saxophone at age 24. Three years later, Schwarz-Bart headed to the U.S. to study at the Berklee College of Music. After playing alongside such luminaries as Roy Hargrove, Danilo Perez, Ari Hoenig, Meshell Ndegeocello, D’Angelo and Chucho Valdes, Schwarz-Bart finally decided to follow his own vision as a band leader. He has recorded several albums as a leader, including Jazz Racine Haiti which will be featured tonight. Released by Motema Music in early 2014, the project synergizes modern jazz and ritual voodoo music from Haiti.

Pharoah Sanders Quartet
John Coltrane described Pharoah Sanders as “a man of large spiritual reservoir, always trying to reach out to truth.” A legendary tenor saxophonist, Sanders is a veteran of Coltrane’s unforgettable free-jazz groups of the mid-1960s. In the decades after his first recordings with Coltrane, Sanders developed the capability of playing convincingly in a variety of contexts, from free to mainstream, and as a mature artist he has discovered a hard-edged lyricism that has served him well. Possessing what has been described as “perhaps one of the most valuable and recognizable sounds to survive the ’60s avant-garde” (JazzTimes), Sanders’ legendary recordings on Impulse from 1966-1971 include Tauhid (1966), Karma (1969), Black Unity (1971), and Thembi (1971). Don’t miss the artist Ornette Coleman once called “probably the best tenor player in the world.”
