November 3, 2014 – Jazz at Lincoln Center offers music fans around the world the opportunity to watch salsa giant Rubén Blades’ sold out performance in Rose Theater via live webcast at jazz.org/live on November 15, 2014 at 8pm ET. Blades will perform jazz standards alongside his distinctive salsa hits with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Led by bassist and music director Carlos Henriquez, these performances will showcase both Blades’ resonant repertoire as well as iconic jazz standards.
Vocalist Eddie Rosado and percussionists Bobby Allende, Marc Quiñones, and Carlos Padron also join Blades for these concerts. Blades makes his Jazz at Lincoln Center debut in this extraordinary three-night-only collaboration taking place from November 13–15 in Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, located at Broadway at 60th Street, New York, New York.
Born on July 16, 1948 in Panama City, Panama, Blades is a singer-songwriter, actor and lawyer, with more than 50 years in the music business. He has composed hundreds of songs and dozens of hits known for their eloquent, politically aware lyrics, colorful characters, and memorable melodies. Blades has made landmark albums in classic Afro-Cuban salsa as well as Afro-Cuban music with hints of rock, jazz and other influences from around the world. As a musician he has won 10 GRAMMY® Awards and sold more than 30 million records. Blades has also appeared as an actor in over 40 films, confirming his status as one of Latin America’s most influential figures.
Beyond his artistic success, Blades has always had an eye for political activism. In 1994 he ran for president of his native Panama and in 2004 he stepped out of the spotlight for five years to work as Minister of Tourism in his homeland. He holds degrees in law from the University of Panama as well as Harvard Law School. He has received Honorary Doctorate degrees from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Berkeley University in California and Lehman College in the Bronx. His work has crossed geopolitical borders, cultures, and genres and has made an impact throughout the world. He was named U.N. World Ambassador Against Racism, and The Loeb Music Library at Harvard University recently created The Rubén Blades Archives with the purpose of collecting his work and papers. Recently Blades officially announced his Farewell Tour, which starts in 2015 followed by his return to the political journey.
The November 15 concert will be streamed live for free, globally, in high-definition audio and video. Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 2014–15 Concert and Education Season features a season-long journey “through the Americas.” Through a diverse array of concerts and programs, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 27th season will explore how jazz has both integrated and influenced the rich musical traditions of the Caribbean and North, South, and Central America.
