Juilliard Jazz Orchestra
The Juilliard Jazz Orchestra and its ensembles play more than 50 performances annually, including appearances at the Detroit Jazz Festival and New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival; tours to destinations such as Costa Rica, Italy, Japan, and Brazil; and regular appearances at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and the world-renowned Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City. For the past several seasons, they have performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center with guest artists such as Ernie Andrews, Kenny Barron, Tom Harrell, Sean Jones, Lew Tabackin, Gerald Wilson, Bobby Watson, Frank Wess, and others. These talented young Juilliard artists are taught by today’s most active, innovative, and respected jazz musicians, as demonstrated on stages and in recording studios worldwide.

Brian Lynch “Unsung Heroes” Project
featuring Vincent Herring and Ralph Moore
Brian Lynch returns to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola with his Unsung Heroes band to perform music from the highly acclaimed Unsung Heroes project (a rare 5-star rating in DownBeat). The project pays tribute to “underappreciated trumpet masters such as Louis Smith, Tommy Turrentine, and Idries Sulieman,” by performing both newly discovered compositions and Lynch’s originals written in tribute. The multigenerational band includes bassist Peter Washington, alto saxophonist Vincent Herring–who has played with greats all the way back to Lionel Hampton and Dizzy Gillespie–and drummer Peter Van Nostrand.

Ted Rosenthal Trio: “Wonderland” Holiday Show
Ted Rosenthal, a Long Island native, first gained international acclaim by winning the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition in 1988. Since then, Rosenthal has made 14 recordings as a leader and performed with Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Bob Brookmeyer, and more. After a successful debut of their holiday album Wonderland last year at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, the Ted Rosenthal Trio returns for another holiday celebration. The repertoire is a showcase of Rosenthal’s skills as an arranger and the trio’s impeccable musicianship, and their reinterpretations leave intact the timelessness of the best known Christmas songs.

Lou Donaldson Quartet
NEA Jazz Master Lou Donaldson has been one of the most respected names in jazz since the 1950s, when he worked with artists like Milt Jackson and Thelonious Monk. With a huge tone and soul-influenced style that combines straight-ahead jazz, blues, bebop, and soul music, he calls his groove-laden style “soul sax.” He continues to play at his very best, entertaining audiences worldwide with spirited performances that are always soulful, thoroughly swinging, and steeped in the blues. His hits on Blue Note Records from thr 1950s and late 1960s are still high demand favorites; and, today, he is the label’s oldest musician from that notable era of jazz.

NY Youth Symphony Jazz with Lew Tabackin
The New York Youth Symphony’s Jazz Band is considered by many to be one of the best ensembles of its kind. The members of this group range from age 12 to 22, making the quality of their sound even more astonishing. In an effort to preserve jazz traditions and styles, the ensemble focuses on the music of the 1930s and 1940s big band orchestras in addition to contemporary pieces. While celebrating the heritage of jazz, the group also values a progressive, emerging new sound. For this season’s performance at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, they will treat audiences to the world premiere of Erica Seguine’s “Drive on the Taconic.” This show–featuring the veteran saxophonist and flutist Lew Tabackin, often a headliner with his group–will be an exciting glimpse at the future of jazz, led by some of the most talented young musicians in the New York area.

The Manhattan School of Music has long been a fixture of the New York music scene and prides itself as one of the first conservatories in the U.S. to acknowledge the prime importance of jazz as an art form. The popular Manhattan School of Music Afro-Cuban Orchestra, comprised of some of the most talented young musicians around, returns to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola under the direction of multi-GRAMMY® Award nominee Bobby Sanabria. Tonight, the award-winning ensemble will perform works by Don Ellis, Frank Zappa, Hermeto Pascoal, and new Afro-Cuban and Latin-tinged pieces by emerging composers and arrangers.

JoAnne Brackeen Trio with Ugonna Okegwo and Neal Smith
Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola is proud to present pianist and composer Joanne Brackeen, the “Picasso of jazz piano” and the only female alumnus of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Nearly 40 years ago, Stan Getz described Brackeen as “one of the most original and creative composers in my band.” True to the “Picasso” nickname, her compositional style has defied definition and evolved throughout her career. The constant elements have been her virtuosic chops and unpredictable approach to piano composition and execution. Brackeen remains an exciting and unique artist, and she brings with her the excellent Neal Smith and Ugonna Okegwo for tonight’s performances.

Charles McPherson Quintet featuring Steve Nelson, Yotam Silberstein, Kiyoshi Kitagawa, and Chuck McPherson
Saxophonist Charles McPherson has been recording as a leader for 50 years. The legendary musician played with Charles Mingus from 1960 to 1972 and has recorded with artists from Art Farmer to the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. McPherson was greatly influenced by Charlie Parker (and featured in Clint Eastwood’s film Bird), and though he can readily channel the bop fury of Bird and his contemporaries, McPherson has also developed a powerful style of his own, both as a great composer and an elite soloist. Tonight’s outstanding band features the equally storied Chuck McPherson on drums, young Israeli guitarist Yotam Silberstein on guitar, New York staple Steve Nelson on vibraphone, and prolific performer and composer Kiyoshi Kitagawa on bass.

Hot Sardines Holiday Show
A hot jazz revivalist group rapidly climbing the ranks, the Hot Sardines have recently performed at Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing, Boston’s Symphony Hall with the Boston Pops, Joe’s Pub, and many more. Their repertoire spans the classic, hard-swinging hot jazz of the 1920s, ‘30s, and ‘40s, brought to life in the 21st century with a postmodern awareness, sense of humor, and infectious confidence. Influences include Prohibition and Great Depression-era New York, Paris, and New Orleans, plus artists like Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, Django Reinhardt, Count Basie, Fred Astaire, Mamie Smith, Billie Holiday, the Andrews Sisters, and Ray Charles.

Josh Evans Big Band
Trumpeter Josh Evans has performed in the bands of and recorded with an extraordinary list of artists, including Jackie McLean, Cedar Walton, Rashied Ali, and Gregory Porter. For one night at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Evans brings his Big Band to perform his arrangements of standards and originals. This currently unrecorded band features an exciting combination of well-established players and up-and-coming musicians, and we cannot wait to hear what they bring to the scene.

The Ladybugs Holiday Show
The Ladybugs are a traditional jazz harmony group known for intricate vocal harmonies and experimental arrangements. Lead by Martina DaSilva, all members of the band sing while playing ukulele, guitar, trombone, bass, and drums. The Ladybugs’ repertoire includes favorites from the 1920s, ‘30s, and ‘40s, infused with old-school swing and blues, plus a dash of klezmer flavor. Popular among audiences that range from lindy hoppers to modern jazz aficionados, The Ladybugs effortlessly keep audiences smiling and moving. Congratulations to ukulele player and vocalist Kate Davis for recently winning the prestigious Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition Rising Star award!

Chris Pattishall and Holiday Swing with Michael Mwenso, Brianna Thomas, Charenee Wade For the second year in what is sure to be a long tradition, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola welcomes back Chris Pattishall and the vocal trio of Michael Mwenso, Brianna Thomas, and Charenee Wade for a high-energy holiday celebration, featuring new takes on classic holiday favorites. Pattishall is a young and immensely talented pianist who regularly leads Late Night Sessions at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, and he is often seen on our stages as a sideman with a huge variety of bandleaders. In addition to their solo careers, vocalists Mwenso, Thomas, and Wade perform together regularly with an incredible chemistry. The band also features up-and-coming bassist Chris Smith and 26-year-old drummer Jamison Ross, who recently won first place in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.

Dick Hyman Solo Piano:
Variations on the Great American Songbook: Standards and Stride
For two nights in the club, legendary pianist Dick Hyman will treat audiences to intimate solo performances, featuring stride variations on standards by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Stephen Sondheim, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, James P. Johnson, Thelonious Monk, and Jelly Roll Morton. Hyman’s career includes a nearly encyclopedic output of over 100 albums under his name, ranging from original piano and orchestral works, to interpretations of classic American music, ragtime, and variants of stride piano. The 87-year-old pianist is rumored to never miss a note, and while that in no way defines his art, the rumor’s mere existence in the context of such demanding music speaks volumes of his technical mastery.

Nuevo Jazz Latino All-Stars
Featuring Pedrito Martinez, Yosvany Terry, Mike Rodriguez, Elio Villafranca, Carlos Henriquez, and Dafnis Prieto
For our special New Year’s week celebration, it’s a Cuban holiday with the Nuevo Jazz Latino All-Stars. The group features Pedrito Martinez, Yosvany Terry, Mike Rodriguez, Elio Villafranca, Dafnis Prieto, and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra bassist Carlos Henriquez, all successful leaders and award-winners in their own right. This unique ensemble originally debuted during Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 2013-14 season for a nearly sold out two-night run in The Appel Room. An unusual opportunity that paid dividends, the group was tasked with composing new original pieces specifically for this ensemble. As a result, each piece of music was written for the individual talents of each fellow band member.
