Jazz at Lincoln Center honors Bobby Hutcherson – master vibraphonist and veteran bandleader – with two special engagements featuring Hutcherson’s peers, protégés, and friends in The Appel Room and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. Known for his originative four-mallet approach to vibes, Hutcherson is one of the pioneers of his instrument along with greats Lionel Hampton and Milt Jackson. These performances take place at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall, located on Broadway at 60th Street, New York, New York.

Former band mates Renee Rosnes and Ray Drummond, and veterans of Hutcherson’s prolific 1960s era, Stanley Cowell and Joe Chambers, will represent the various incarnations of Hutcherson’s lineups, alongside handpicked protégés Steve Nelson and Warren Wolf. The groups will perform a repertoire spanning Hutcherson’s noteworthy ensembles which throughout the last five decades included Eric Dolphy, Andrew Hill, Herbie Hancock, and Harold Land.Hutcherson, originally scheduled to appear on this concert, is not able to participate as planned. “I’m thankful to be honored by Jazz at Lincoln Center,” he said. “I’ve been looking forward to this event and being reunited with some old (and new) friends for close to a year. Unfortunately, my emphysema has progressed to the point where I can no longer fly long distances. I know the show will be great, and I will be watching the webcast.”
Free pre-concert discussions will be held in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Irene Diamond Education Center at 6pm & 8:30pm.

Coinciding with Jazz at Lincoln Center’s “Bobby Hutcherson: Life of a Legend” performances in The Appel Room, this high-profile group joins forces to celebrate a living legend whose playing has touched younger musicians throughout the jazz world.
