Pianist Marcus Roberts, the fearless virtuoso recently featured on CBS News’ “60 Minutes,” brings his newest ensemble, the Modern Jazz Generation, to Jazz at Lincoln Center’s The Appel Room on September 26 and 27 in a concert event entitled Piano Masters of Melody, at 7pm and 9:30pm. Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall is located at Broadway at 60th Street, New York, New York.
The 13-piece Modern Jazz Generation, founded in 2013 on the principle of education through mentoring, features the multi-generational talents of trumpeter Tim Blackmon, bassist Thaddeus Expose, clarinetist Joe Goldberg, trumpeter Randall Haywood, trumpeter Alphonso Horne, baritone and tenor saxophonist Tissa Khosla, drummer Jimmy MacBride, bassist Raviv Markovitz, drummer Jason Marsalis, alto saxophonist Ricardo Pascal, tenor saxophonist Stephen Riley, trombonist Ron Westray, and tuba player and trombonist Corey Wilcox. The group’s first CD, Romance, Swing and the Blues, will be released on October 7, 2014.
“Marcus is like a movement,” says Wynton Marsalis, Managing and Artistic Director, Jazz at Lincoln Center. “Years from now, people will look back on all the students and piano players that he influenced and it will become known as the School of Marcus Roberts. He is a genius.”
In 1985, at age 21, Roberts joined Wynton Marsalis and toured with his group for the next six years. Since his 1987 Jazz at Lincoln Center debut, Roberts’ presence has been deeply significant, and his recorded and commissioned works have honored some of his most revered predecessors of the piano. For this occasion, Roberts and the Modern Jazz Generation will focus on four influential melody maestros possessing an original style that greatly influenced his approach to melodic composition: Jelly Roll Morton, Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver, and Chick Corea.
These concerts will stream live in high-definition audio and video for free to a global audience via jazz.org/live. The concerts will also be available on Livestream’s mobile and connected TV applications with real-time DVR, chat, photos and other materials available to fans worldwide.
Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 2014–15 Concert and Education Season features a season-long journey “through the Americas.” Through a diverse array of concerts and programs, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 27th season will explore how jazz has both integrated and influenced the rich musical traditions of the Caribbean and North, South, and Central America. This season, Jazz at Lincoln Center also celebrates the 10th anniversary of Frederick P. Rose Hall, “The House of Swing,” which opened its doors on October 18, 2004.
