New York, NY (August 8, 2014) Guitar icon Bill Frisell has established himself as one of the great storytellers of jazz guitar with an exceptional ability to convey a range of aesthetics with skill and heart. Frisell returns as curator of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Roots of Americana series, joined by an array of guest musicians, to explore the intersections of rock, country, jazz, and blues. This season, the series opens with This Land: Woody Guthrie’s Better World, the first of three concerts in the Roots of Americana series during the 2014-15 season, and takes place on September 19-20 at 7pm & 9:30pm in The Appel Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall, Broadway at 60th Street, New York, New York.
Joined by the Big Sur Quintet – violinist Jenny Scheinman, violist Eyvind Kang, drummer Rudy Royston, and cellist/singer Hank Roberts – Frisell will examine one of folk music’s preeminent figures, Woody Guthrie. Best known for the classic “This Land Is Your Land,” Guthrie was at the helm of the folk music revival of the mid-twentieth century, and a major influence on Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, and John Mellencamp, among countless others. Drawing inspiration from Guthrie’s music and views, on the racial, social and economic struggles of his time, Frisell will explore the lineage of protest songs, whilst re-imagining familiar melodies through an adventurous perspective. Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 2014–15 Concert and Education Season features a season-long journey “through the Americas.” Through a diverse array of concerts and programs, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 27th season will explore how jazz has both integrated and influenced the rich musical traditions of the Caribbean and North, South, and Central America. Single tickets for Bill Frisell’s Roots of Americana series, and all 2014–15 season concerts, will be available on August 11. Ticket prices for The Appel Room start at $45. Tickets can be purchased through jazz.org 24 hours a day or at the Jazz at Lincoln Center Box Office, located on Broadway at 60th Street, ground floor. Box Office hours are Monday–Saturday from 10am to 6pm (or 30 minutes past curtain) and Sunday from noon to 6pm (or 30 minutes past curtain).
