New York, NY –June 5, 2014 – Jazz at Lincoln Center proudly presents the Jazz for Young People on Tour: Let Freedom Swing celebration concert at Marcus Garvey Park on June 28 at 5pm. This free family concert is part of the 2014 Harlem Arts Festival. Marcus Garvey Park is located at 18 Mt Morris Park W, in Harlem.
Jazz for Young People on Tour: Let Freedom Swing, a block party style celebration, will feature today’s most talented, young jazz artists including Benny Benack III, Bryan Carter, Jake Goldbas, Sammy Miller, Michael Mwenso, Camille Thurman, Charenee Wade and many others. In an interactive concert for families, the featured performers will invite the spirit of the Harlem Renaissance into the rich cultural landscape of modern day Harlem.
Jazz for Young People on Tour, based on the Wynton Marsalis and Sandra Day O’Connor Let Freedom Swing: Conversations on Jazz and Democracy curriculum, brings outstanding jazz artists and performances to New York City and metropolitan area schools. In Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 2013-14 season, 225 Jazz for Young People on Tour: Let Freedom Swing concerts were presented in 75 New York City schools for nearly 9000 students. The 2014 Harlem Arts Festival will present more than 40 artist groups over the course of three days. The festival kicks off with an Opening Night Party at MIST Harlem on June 27, and continues with two days of free programming in Marcus Garvey Park, June 28-29. About Harlem Arts Festival
The Harlem Arts Festival is a multidisciplinary arts organization that produces performances throughout Harlem each year, culminating in an annual festival taking place the last weekend of June, that showcases local performers to inspire and nourish the artistic community in Harlem. It aims to promote arts education and literacy by implementing arts-related discussion forums, educational workshops, performance opportunities and activities for youth and family. This project is part of Harlem’s addition to the larger, citywide commitment to provide free art in the public parks during the spring and summer months.
Founded in 2010, the Harlem Arts Festival takes place in the newly renovated Richard Rodgers Amphitheater and the surrounding park. The goal of the Harlem Arts Festival is to fuel the prosperity of our neighborhood and mark the Amphitheater as a world‐class cultural venue. We are interested in presenting artists across genres — dance, music, theater, and visual arts — whose work contributes to the contemporary and popular dialogue of the Harlem community.
