Willie Jones III Sextet
Known for his distinct style of rhythmic expression, drummer Willie Jones III is one of the world’s top jazz drummers. As a leader, Jones has five critically acclaimed albums under his belt. As a sideman, he’s held long tenures in bands led by Roy Hargrove, Hank Jones and Cedar Walton. Jones’ repertoire will include hard bop selections, the Cedar Walton songbook and the debut of originals tunes.

Hamilton De Holanda & Anat Cohen
Widely considered the top instrumentalist in Brazil (or in the U.S., the “Jimi Hendrix of bandolim”), Latin GRAMMY® Award nominee De Holanda has spent a career reinventing his instrument of choice, the 10-string mandolin. By masterfully interweaving choro, jazz, samba, and much more, De Holanda synthesizes traditional styles into an open framework that highlights his virtuosic abilities. This approach makes him a perfect match for the genre-crossing clarinetist Anat Cohen, whom The New York Times called “a revelation” after a recent performance at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. Cohen has been voted Clarinetist of Year by the Jazz Journalists Association for six consecutive years, and she has topped both critics and readers polls in DownBeat magazine for the last several years.

Johnny O’Neal Trio
In addition to playing the role of Art Tatum in Ray (2004), Johnny O’Neal is a seasoned pianist who has worked regularly with musicians and groups such as Clark Terry, Ray Brown, Sonny Stitt, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, and Milt Jackson’s quartet. The late, great Mulgrew Miller (himself an esteemed piano master) said of O’Neal: “There are so many outstanding things about Johnny’s playing… Number one: the touch. Johnny has a million dollar touch… The other thing is his feeling of swing, which is so natural. Then there’s Johnny’s personality – so engaging. And Johnny can play a ballad like few people, if any. I’ve always held his talent in the highest regard, and I think he’s a very special artist.”

Marcus and Riza Printup Quartet: Desire CD Release
Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra trumpeter Marcus Printup and harpist extraordinaire Riza Printup celebrate Desire, their genre-blending album that has already received high praise from fans and critics. These sets will feature an assortment of jazz, bop, pop, and Brazilian forms, with musical examples including arrangements of Duke Ellington, Stevie Wonder, Carol King, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Marcus is a world-renowned soloist and ensemble member, as is Riza, whose harp playing has been compared to a piano in its complexity and melodic clarity. Join us as we showcase the incredible talent of one of our own in this unique instrumental format.

Sherman Irby Quintet: The Music of Art Blakey
Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra member Sherman Irby brings his all-star quintet to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. An accomplished bandleader and saxophonist with the sweetest tone, Irby will be paying tribute to Art Blakey and the hard bop music pioneered by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Joining Irby will be fellow JLCO member Vincent Gardner, plus former JLCO member Eric Reed and returning Jazz at Lincoln Center favorite Willie Jones III, whose resumes both include renowned leadership and supporting roles with icons like Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, Christian McBride, and Arturo Sandoval. Rounding out the group is Gerald Cannon, who launched his own prestigious career as the bassist for none other than Art Blakey.

This remarkable recording was the only collaboration between legendary vocalist Sarah Vaughan and trumpet icon Clifford Brown. Tonight, critically acclaimed musicians of multiple eras—many of them regular performers at Jazz at Lincoln Center—join forces to premiere new arrangements of this classic material, in a showcase of two great voices of our time.

Our Father Who Art Blakey: Valery Ponomarev Big Band
World-renowned Russian trumpeter Valery Ponomarev leads “Our Father Who Art Blakey,” a big band tribute to his own former bandleader, Art Blakey. Blakey was best known for his ability to find and hone the sharpest young talent in jazz, from Lee Morgan to Wynton Marsalis, and Ponomarev, who held the trumpet spot right before Marsalis, is no exception. He now leads his own band in the same spirit, highlighting some of the most talented young jazz musicians. Join us at the club for some expertly arranged hard bop, featuring an entire big band of supreme instrumentalists.

Unforgettable Dinah: Denise Perrier Quintet with Houston Person
Celebrating Dinah Washington
San Francisco treasure Denise Perrier, known as “the voice with a heart,” is making her Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola debut. From the repertoire to the signature tiara and furs, the vivacious Perrier brings Dinah Washington – “the Queen” – back to life. Performing Washington’s greatest hits, from “I Wanna Be Loved” to “Big Long Sliding Thing,” Perrier has taken this critically-acclaimed show from the San Francisco Bay Area to venues around the country. These sets will demonstrate why Washington is considered the most popular—and perhaps one of the most controversial—black female recording artists of the 1950s.

The Amigos: Songs of the Southland

The Amigos deliver foot-stomping, accordion-infused Americana music, blending folk-rock, zydeco/cajun, and hot jazz. Rockin’ solos, daredevil vocal harmonies, and wild western-wear have taken the Amigos from sold-out shows at Lincoln Center to the Philadelphia Folk Festival and Nashville’s Music City Roots. Fresh off a six-week tour of Southeast Asia for the U.S. Depart of State, The Amigos are gearing up for an exciting summer schedule with vocalist and Jazz at Lincoln Center favorite, Brianna Thomas. These sets will feature new Amigos compositions inspired by travels in the southeastern United States, as well as the music of Gene Austin, Jimmie Rodgers, and Bessie Smith.

Trio da Paz and Friends: The Music of Jobim & Getz
Keeping an unprecedented streak alive for the seventh consecutive year, Trio da Paz returns to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola for a two-week summer residency. Formed in 1990 by three of Brazil’s most in-demand master musicians, Romero Lubambo, Nilson Matta, and Duduka da Fonseca, Trio da Paz updates the infectious spirit of jazz-oriented Brazilian music. With their harmonically adventurous interactions, daring improvisations, and dazzling rhythms, this group redefines Brazilian jazz.

Michael Carvin: Flash Forward CD Release

Michael Carvin returns to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola to celebrate the release of Flash Forward, his latest CD in a career spanning over 250 recordings. He has played with leading voices throughout the history of jazz and Motown, including artists like Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, and B.B. King. His great influence as a teacher has shaped the sound of today’s top drummers, with a few of his 300+ students including Kimberly Thompson, Allison Miller, E.J. Strickland, and Eric McPherson. A tireless mentor, Carvin is known for featuring bands with up-and-coming and culturally diverse musicians.
