Juilliard School Ensemble

Alexis Cuadrado
Lorca Soundscape
Barcelona-born Alexis Cuadrado is one of the most sought after musicians in New York. Cuadrado has released five albums as bassist and bandleader, including 2013’s A Lorca Soundscape, which was critically acclaimed by both DownBeat and New York Times. As a sideman, Cuadrado is equally distinguished, having performed with top musicians like Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Turner, and GRAMMY® Award-winner Angélique Kidjo. For this concert, he is joined by vocalist Claudia Acuña and saxophonist Yosvany Terry.

Celebrating Caribbean American Heritage
Sarah Elizabeth Charles is a vocalist and composer based in New York City. Charles’ musical stylings are unique, and the intricacies of her art focus on both modernizing classics and composing distinctive originals. Besides being a member of Manner Effect and The Enoch Smith Jr. Trio, Charles leads the S.E. Charles Quartet, which released its debut record, Red, to sold-out sets at Dizzy’s in September 2012. For this show, the group will perform repertoire celebrating Caribbean American heritage and will be joined by special guests in the Haitian music community, including the great Emeline Michel (June 4, 7:30p set only) and the incomparable Godwin Louis.

Dion Parson & 21st Century Band
GRAMMY® Award-winning drummer and composer Dion Parson has put together a powerhouse ensemble comprising seven of the world’s finest musicians. Together with saxophonist Ron Blake (of the legendary Saturday Night Live Band), Parson formed 21st Century Band in 1998 to showcase the music of the U.S. Virgin Islands. It has since developed an innovative sound that mixes Virgin Islands traditions, such as Quelbe, and Caribbean infusions like reggae, calypso, soca, mento, ska, zouk, steel pan, chutney, and funk, with New Orleans and African overtones.

Mentoring Through the Arts with Dion Parson
In 2009, Dion Parson partnered with the U.S. Virgin Islands Lottery to develop and implement Mentoring Through the Arts of Music, an education program that focuses on recruiting, mentoring, and developing the talent of young Virgin Islands musicians. His work with this group will be showcased for this special evening at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.

Eddie Daniels and Roger Kellaway
Clarinetist Eddie Daniels has enjoyed an illustrious five-decade career, performing and recording with such musicians as Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Freddie Hubbard, Yusef Lateef, and George Benson. His musical partner in crime, Roger Kellaway, is both a major pianist and a composer-arranger of protean ability. His discography includes more than 250 albums, and he has worked with music legends across genres, from Elvis to Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie to Yo-Yo Ma, Joni Mitchell to Mancini, and from Quincy Jones to Michael Tilson Thomas. Fresh from winning the 2014 Grand Prix de l’Academie du Jazz, recognizing the best record of the year in France, these masters will perform together at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.

Melissa Aldana & Crash Trio CD Release
Chilean tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana made history in 2013 as the first female instrumentalist to win 1st place in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. Most recently, she was selected to receive the prestigious Martin E. Segal Award from Lincoln Center. After receiving the Berklee Presidential Scholarship in 2007 and graduating from Berklee College of Music in 2009, Aldana moved to New York City, where she quickly became a part of its jazz scene. Her first two albums were critically acclaimed, and Aldana recently won the Altazor Award in Chile for Best Jazz Record of 2012. Don’t miss the release of her third album at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.

Paquito D’Rivera
Jazz Meets the Classics
Paquito D’Rivera defies categorization. The winner of numerous GRAMMY® Awards, he is celebrated both for his artistry in Latin jazz and for his achievements as a classical composer. The Cuban jazz reedman has recorded more than 30 solo albums and founded many acclaimed ensembles dedicated to celebrating Latin music, including the Chamber Jazz Ensemble, the Paquito D’Rivera Big Band, and the Paquito D’Rivera Quintet. While D’Rivera’s discography reflects a passion for jazz, bebop, and Latin music, his contributions to classical music are significant as well, having performed as a soloist with orchestras like the London Philharmonic, the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony, and the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra. These sets at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola will showcase D’Rivera at his best when Jazz Meets the Classics.

Alan Broadbent Trio
GRAMMY® Award-winning arranger, conductor, and pianist Alan Broadbent was born in Auckland, New Zealand. In 1966, at the age of 19, he moved to the U.S. with a DownBeat magazine scholarship to Berklee College of Music. Over the course of a 45-year career that began with an invitation to join Woody Herman’s band as pianist and arranger, Broadbent has collaborated with some of the most recognized names in jazz, including Irene Kral, Natalie Cole, Charlie Haden, Shirley Horn, and Diana Krall. In 2007, he was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Made in the UK: Partisans
Bassist Steve Swallow describes Partisans as “some of the most refreshing music I’ve heard in a long while: uncompromising, very well-written, and very well played.” Since 1996, Partisans have been thrilling audiences in the UK and Europe with their energetic performances of tightly knit themes and groove-based sounds, bridging the gap between New York swing, European improvisation, and UK jam band. Composed of saxophonist Julian Siegel, guitarist Phil Robson, bassist Thaddeus Kelly, and drummer Gene Calderazzo, they are widely acknowledged as the godfathers of the new wave of British jazz and have played with critically acclaimed musicians like Swallow and Wayne Krantz.

Azar Lawrence
Saxophonist Azar Lawrence approaches music with spiritual reverence. To him, “music is of a pure nature all around us and within us…Throughout the universe, every atom everywhere produces a tone whether we can hear it or not…musicians dedicate our lives to a certain daily practice in order to try to produce the purest vibration tones.” Through the course of his career, which began in his teens, Lawrence has performed with numerous music luminaries, including McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, and Earth, Wind & Fire. For these shows at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, he is joined by a formidable group of sidemen that includes drummer Jeff Tain Watts, pianist Benito Gonzalez, trumpeter Eddie Henderson and bassist Essiet Essiet.

Jazz at Lincoln Center Band Director Academy Faculty
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to catch the esteemed faculty ensemble of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Band Director Academy. Multi-instrumentalist Ronald Carter is a much awarded educator and one of the most sought-after clinicians around. Pianist and organist Reginald Thomas is active as an educator and performer, travelling across the country and internationally to serve as faculty at summer jazz programs and perform in such cities as Calgary, Milan, Warsaw, and London. Bassist Rodney Whitaker, a well-travelled clinician and educator, was a long-term member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and has toured with the Terence Blanchard Quintet and the Roy Hargrove Quintet. Pianist, keyboardist, and arranger Jim Gasior has led his New World School of the Arts students to be perennial winners of the DownBeat Student Music Awards and other national honors, while maintaining his busy recording schedule. Trombonist Scott Brown is a highly lauded educator, having led the Roosevelt Jazz Band to national and international acclaim over the past two decades, while playing professionally with the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra.
