Fairview Baptist Church Brass Band featuring Shannon Powell
The Fairview Baptist Church Brass Band was organized in 1970 by banjoist and guitarist Danny Barker, who returned to New Orleans after performing extensively with jazz legends such as Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, Cab Calloway, and Charlie Parker. Illustrious alumni of the Fairview Baptist Church Brass Band include Wynton Marsalis, Leroy Jones, Branford Marsalis, Herlin Riley, and Dr. Michael White. The band performing at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, comprising Kevin Louis (trumpet), David Harris (trombone), Darryl Adams (saxophone), Jeffrey Hills (tuba), and Terrence Andrews (bass drum), will be joined by another alumnus, legendary drummer and “The King of Treme,” Shannon Powell.

Temple University Jazz Band featuring Jon Faddis and Jimmy Heath
Led by respected trumpeter and Chair of Jazz Studies Terell Stafford, the Temple University Jazz Band regularly participates in nationwide and international festivals and is a frequent award winner at the annual Villanova Jazz Festival. TUJB has worked with numerous jazz artists on stage, including Wynton Marsalis, The Vanguard Orchestra, Slide Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, and Dr. Billy Taylor. For this engagement, they are joined by the legendary Jimmy Heath.

Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music Jazz Ensemble
featuring Special Guest Fareed Haque
The Jazz Ensemble is Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music’s premier big band. Performing a wide variety of styles, including traditional swing, bebop, post-bop, fusion, Latin, and avant-garde, the ensemble places special emphasis on great composers like Thad Jones, Bill Holman, and Bob Brookmeyer. Through its composer residency programs and regular concerts, the band has performed with artists like Maria Schneider, Slide Hampton, Eddie Daniels, Kenny Garrett, and Ahmad Jamal. For this concert, they are joined by modern guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque.

The Juilliard Jazz Orchestra features some of the world’s most talented emerging jazz artists, many of whom are already professional musicians. Oran Etkin Gathering Light CD Release
Featuring Lionel Loueke
Described as a “great clarinet player” and “an excellent improviser” (New York Times), clarinetist Oran Etkin will debut his new album, Gathering Light, at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. His music is influenced by frequent collaborations with musicians from different traditions and cultures, and the rich material featured on Gathering Light is inspired by the spontaneous musical exchanges that characterize his collaborations, combined with the traditional melodies and rhythms he learned along the way.

Chris Pattishall Quintet
Mary Lou Williams’ Zodiac Suite
Mary Lou Williams was a pivotal figure in the development of jazz, forever influencing the music as a pianist, composer, arranger, and lifelong educator. Her Zodiac Suite, which premiered in 1944 at Town Hall, is an ambitious study of character and mood through explorations of the 12 astrological signs. Pianist Chris Pattishall will lead a quintet, featuring some of jazz’s most talented up and coming artists, in this kaleidoscopic and swinging work.

Ted Rosenthal Trio
Rhapsody in Gershwin CD Release
The Ted Rosenthal Trio, which features Rosenthal on piano, Martin Wind on bass, and Tim Horner on drums, will release Rhapsody in Gershwin at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. Featuring their arrangements of Gershwin songs, including “Rhapsody in Blue”, the album is a showcase of Rosenthal’s skills as an arranger and the trio’s impeccable musicianship. Rosenthal first achieved international recognition by winning first prize at the 2nd annual Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. He has since built a career as a performer and educator, having shared the stage with jazz greats like Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Bob Brookmeyer, and James Moody. Rosenthal is currently a faculty member of the Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School.

In I Wanna Be Evil, singer, actress, and writer René Marie pays a fiery, sensual, and clever tribute to the inimitable Eartha Kitt. Marie shares her inspiration for the project: “Eartha Kitt is one of America’s strongest iconic figures. She was an inspiring artist, a strong woman, and an essential activist in different ways. She was homeless when she first moved to New York City, yet became a star. She was a sensual and powerful woman in a man’s world at a time when most women were background, not front and center. She was a black actress in Hollywood at a time when most black actors were given subservient roles, yet here she was – Catwoman…”

Donald Harrison’s Berklee Quintet
Part of the Berklee Masters on the Road Program
Alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, a 1981 Berklee School of Music alumnus, is a New Orleans-born traditionalist, a modern jazz trendsetter, a former Jazz Messenger, a nurturer of young talent, a composer, and a bandleader. A kind of Crescent City renaissance man, Harrison has performed with a musical who’s who that includes Art Blakey, Dr. John, Digable Planets, Lena Horne, and Miles Davis, to name just a few. He visits Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola to lead a quintet of Berklee students as part of the school’s Masters on the Road program.

Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia
Terell Stafford, Artistic Director
Terell Stafford, world-renowned trumpet player and Director of Jazz Studies at Temple University, has organized an orchestra of 17 stellar, homegrown musical artists to create the Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia. In addition to embodying Philadelphia’s vital jazz legacy with energetic jazz performances, the Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia makes their Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola debut.

Ben Wolfe Quintet
With Special Guest Nicholas Payton
Wynton Marsalis said, “Ben Wolfe swings with authority.” The talented bassist-composer takes residence at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola for four nights to play his own original music. He is joined by the outstanding trumpeter Nicholas Payton. They are joined by Dave Kikosi on piano, Donald Edwards on drums, and Stacy Dillard on tenor and soprano saxophones.

Ryan Kisor Quintet
Longtime Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra trumpeter Ryan Kisor returns to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola for two nights to lead the small group that he has performed and recorded with to great acclaim for over 15 years. The group has several CD releases as a unit, and has extensively toured the US and Japan.

Juilliard Jazz Quartet
