Celebrating Dexter Gordon on what would have been his 91st birthday, the legendary tenor saxophonist and Academy-Award nominee for the leading role in the film Round Midnight is remembered and honored by this world-class ensemble under the direction of his pianist and keeper of the flame, George Cables. Cables is joined by tenor saxophonists Jerry Weldon and Jimmy Greene, vibraphonist Joe Locke, bassist Dezron Douglas and drummer Lewis Nash. The legendary saxophonist Jimmy Heath joins the band on March 2nd only.

Combo Nuvo
Combo Nuvo, the NYU Jazz Faculty-in-Residence Ensemble, combines influences ranging from jazz and classical to blues and world music to create a truly original ensemble. The group includes Dave Schroeder, NYU Jazz Studies Director, harmonica and woodwinds; Lenny Pickett, woodwinds; Brad Shepik, acoustic guitar; Rich Shemaria, piano; Mike Richmond, cello; Billy Drewes, woodwinds; and John Hadfield, percussion. Child prodigy and pianist-composer Emily Bear, whose debut CD was produced by Quincy Jones artist, will also join Combo Nuvo for this performance.

Eliane Elias
With 23 albums to date demonstrating her unique gifts as a pianist, singer, composer and arranger, Eliane Elias brings her distinctive and immediately recognizable musical style, which blends her Brazilian roots, alluring voice, and impressive instrumental jazz skills, to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. She is joined by Steve Cardenas on guitar, Marc Johnson on bass, and Rafael Barata on drums.

Featuring Harold Mabern
Joe Farnsworth is one of the most recorded drummers on the current scene, having appeared on over 70 recordings for musicians such as Wynton Marsalis, Cedar Walton, Pharoah Sanders, and Benny Golson. For this set, he is joined by special guest Harold Mabern, piano; Eric Alexander, tenor saxophone; and John Webber, bass.

Anat Fort
Part of the Newish Jewish Music Festival
Tel Aviv-based, jazz pianist Anat Fort will present a program that combines her own original music with jazz arrangements of the music of Israeli rock star Shalom Hanoch for her Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola debut. The program was created especially for the inaugural Newish Jewish Music Festival, which will celebrate contemporary Jewish and Israeli culture and music with concerts at Town Hall, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and City Winery.

Toshiko Akiyoshi – Lew Tabakin Quartet
Possibly one of the greatest marriages in jazz history, both musically and romantically, Toshiko Akiyoshi and Lew Tabakin have been swinging jazz in various formats, from small groups to big bands, since the 1960s. Akiyoshi, a NEA Jazz Master, is known for challenging and textured arrangements that sometimes evoke her homeland of Japan. On March 26th, they also celebrate Tabakin’s 74th birthday.
