Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola’s February shows feature not-to-be-missed performances by some of jazz’s leading voices, among them Renee Rosnes, Kenny Rampton, Jack Walrath, T. Oliver Reid, Omer Avital and Amina Figarova. We also showcase the music of a few of jazz’s greatest composers and instrumentalists, including Terry Gibbs, Joe Wilder and the late Dexter Gordon. New CDs by Catherine Russell, Matt Wilson, Ulysses Owens, and Brianna Thomas are celebrated. Mid-month, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola courts Valentine’s Day with a seductive performance by GRAMMY-nominated vocalist Tierney Sutton.

Amina Figarova Sextet
Pianist-composer Amina Figarova, “among the most important composers to come into jazz in the new millennium” (JazzTimes), will make her Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola debut with her sextet featuring Bart Platteau (flute), Luques Curtis (bass), Alex Pope Norris (trumpet), Jason Brown (drums), and Marc Mommaas (saxophone).

Jack Walrath Quartet
Perhaps best-known for his work with legends like Charles Mingus, Ray Charles and Gary Peacock, trumpeter and arranger Jack Walrath is also a spirited bandleader in his own right. He is joined by tenor saxophonist Tim Armacost, pianist George Burton, bassist Boris Kozlov, and dummer Donald Edwards for this concert.

Ulysses Owens CD Release
One of the most high-profile sideman, Ulysses Owens Jr. takes the lead for two nights, celebrating the release of a new CD and joined by pianist Christian Sands, trumpeter Duane Eubanks, bassists Reuben Rogers (2/10) and Matthew Rybicki (2/11), trombonist Michael Dease, and guitarist Gilad Hekselman.

Kenny Rampton Organ Octet
Outstanding trumpeter Kenny Rampton, familiar to many for his inspired soloing with bands like the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Mingus Big Band, leads an octet whose members include vocalist guitarist Bill Sims, saxophonists Sherman Irby and Donny McCaslin, trombonist Elliot Mason, organist Brian Charette, bassist Dan Stein, and drummer Tony Mason.

Tierney Sutton Band
A five-time GRAMMY nominee, Tierney Sutton is often described as “a singer’s singer”, but just as often, she is described as a “musician’s singer”, who uses her voice like an instrument. Her band has successfully toured and recorded for over two decades now and they join us for Valentine’s Day weekend.

Brianna Thomas CD Release
Last September, writing in the Wall Street Journal, Will Friedwald dubbed Brianna Thomas “one of the best unrecorded singers out there”. That all changes this February, with the release of her debut CD, produced by drummer Ulysses Owens. He joins her for this performance along with pianist Allyn Johnson, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, harpist Riza Printup, trumpeter Marcus Printup, and trombonist Wycliffe Gordon.

“[Omer] Avital and his group are producing some of the most original music being heard in New York,” says the New York Times. Swinging Tribute to Joe Wilder
A true living legend, trumpeter Joe Wilder turns 92 on February 22nd. In his over 70 year career, he has played with legends ranging from Count Basie to Billie Holiday, Hank Jones and Benny Goodman. He will be an honored guest at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola when he is saluted by a band composed of some of his favorite artists.

The Dexter Gordon Legacy Ensemble

Celebrating Dexter Gordon on what would have been his 91st birthday, the legendary tenor saxophonist and Academy-Award nominee for the leading role in the film Round Midnight is remembered and honored by this world-class ensemble under the direction of his pianist and keeper of the flame, George Cables. Cables is joined by saxophonist Jerry Weldon, bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Victor Lewis. The legendary saxophonist Jimmy Heath joins the band on March 2nd only.
