JAZZ IN JANUARY AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER
30 nights of programming throughout Frederick P. Rose Hall includes world premieres, first-time appearances, special guests, celebrations and tributes to jazz legends and Martin Luther King, Jr.
New York, NY – December 16, 2013 – Jazz at Lincoln Center will produce 30 consecutive nights of jazz in Rose Theater, The Allen Room, and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola throughout January.
Concerts and special events will include the world premiere of new works by Victor Goines and Ted Nash, with special guest appearances by Branford Marsalis and Wendell Pierce. Ten-time GRAMMY® Award-winner Bobby McFerrin will present his critically acclaimed spirityouall project in a special performance in Rose Theater. Vijay Iyer and Billy Childs will lead ensembles in The Allen Room for the first time, and Bill Frisell will return to explore the beginnings of country music. Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola will celebrate the music of the legendary Cedar Walton and honor civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr. (See complete schedule details below).

Bill Frisell: The Bristol Sessions
January 17-18, 2014
The Allen Room, 7pm & 9:30pm
The second installment of Bill Frisell’s Roots of Americana series features the eminent guitarist with singer-guitarist-songwriter Buddy Miller, with whom he collaborated on the 2011 CD Majestic Silver Strings, and vocalist-fiddler Carrie Rodriguez, out of Austin, Texas, with whom he toured in early 2012. After they celebrate the moment that is thought of as the beginning of “country” music—the 1927 recordings in Bristol, Tennessee where The Carter Family and Jimmie Rogers recorded for the first time—things will, Frisell states, “just go on from there.” As a companion to these concerts, the Birthplace of Country Music® Museum will also present a custom multi-media exhibit in The Ertegun Atrium that will tell the story of the Bristol Sessions.

JLCO Fresh Sounds: Ted Nash & Victor Goines

Victor Goines and Ted Nash – two of jazz music’s most critically-acclaimed band leaders, reedsmen, composers and arrangers – will each premiere new works in a special concert event entitled JLCO Fresh Sounds. On one half of JLCO Fresh Sounds, Goines will lead the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and guest Branford Marsalis to premiere his new work, Crescent City, a meditation on Goines’ hometown of New Orleans. On the second half of this special event, Nash will lead the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra to perform his latest piece The Presidential Suite. The new work comprises six movements reflecting, he relates, on “important and inspiring speeches by world leaders” that “use the intonation of the voice to form the thematic material, and the spirit and message to shape the intensity of the arrangements.” Wendell Pierce, of HBO’s “The Wire” and “Treme,” and host of the nationally syndicated Jazz at Lincoln Center Radio, will appear as guest orator.

Jazz at Lincoln Center presents a salute to the late Cedar Walton (born January 17, 1934), “a pianist who distinguished himself as both an accompanist and a soloist, and who wrote some of the most enduring compositions in modern jazz…” (The New York Times). Joining co-music directors Michael Mwenso and Evan Sherman for these special concerts are bassist Russell Hall and pianists Emmet Cohen and Gerald Clayton (January 18th only).

Vijay Iyer and Billy Childs respectively make their first time appearances as leaders in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s The Allen Room, one of the world’s most iconic performance spaces. These performances mark the second installment in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s A Side, B Side Series, which spotlights two extraordinary contemporary artists over the course of one weekend. Vijay Iyer and Billy Childs, each a virtuoso pianist and composer of originality and broad scope in his own right, present their respective conceptions on separate shows. A front-runner in numerous critics’ polls in recent years and 2013 MacArthur Genius Award recipient, Iyer undertakes his Jazz at Lincoln Center debut with his working trio of bassist Stephan Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore. A three-time GRAMMY® award-winner, Childs deploys a quartet with all-stars Scott Colley on bass and Brian Blade on drums, augmented by the Ying Quartet.
The Vijay Iyer Trio and Billy Childs performances are presented by Mica and Ahmet Ertegun as part of the Ertegun Jazz Concert Series. Tickets are sold separately for A Side, B Side events. Ticket prices start at $55 for 7pm performances at $45 for 9:30pm performances.

Bobby McFerrin brings it on home, returning to Jazz at Lincoln Center with his spirityouall band. With this project, McFerrin embraces his roots in rock, folk, funk, and bluegrass, reimagining Americana Featuring beloved traditional songs like “He’s Got the Whole World In His Hands” and “Every Time I Feel The Spirit” alongside original tunes, Bobby shares his personal search for grace, wisdom, and freedom. Come sing along as Bobby and the band raise the roof with joyful grooves.
