JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER’s SWING UNIVERSITY WELCOMES NEW PROFESSORS AND COURSES IN 2014 WINTER TERM
Author Felicity Howlett and big band leader John Wriggle Join Line of Esteemed Educators in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Public Education Program
(New York, NY) Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) welcomes Art Tatum expert and author Felicity Howlett and big band leader, trombonist, John Wriggle to the esteemed faculty list of Swing University to teach specialized courses in the 2014 Winter Term.
Felicity Howlett’s course “Art Tatum,” begins on February 26 and will elaborate on topics mentioned in her multi-volume book An Introduction to Art Tatum’s Performance Approaches: Composition, Improvisation and Melodic Variation. Trombonist John Wriggle, who has worked as music editor on Oscar and GRAMMY® Award-winning scores, will delve into the complexities of “The Evolution and Development of Big Band Jazz,” beginning January 28. An accomplished educator, Wriggle has taught a multitude of courses – including courses on Duke Ellington – at John Jay College, Rutgers University, and The City College of New York. Howlett and Wriggle join a long list of award-winning jazz scholars, historians, and musicians who have witnessed the history first-hand including Bill Charlap, Jon Faddis, Wynton Marsalis, Lewis Nash, Vincent Pelote, and many others. “Swing University has developed the reputation of being one of the most serious and intensive jazz history programs in the world,” says Todd Stoll, Vice President of Education, Jazz at Lincoln Center. “The scholars and artists that make up our faculty are among the most esteemed jazz educators you will find.”
Swing University’s 2014 Winter Term begins January 13 and registration is now open. In addition Howlett and Wriggle’s courses the Winter Term includes the following topics: “Albert Ayler” taught by historian Ben Young; “Jelly Roll Morton” taught by Ragtime authority and pianist Terry Waldo; the perennially popular “Jazz 201” and “Jazz 301” will be led by JALC curator and renowned historian Phil Schaap.
