DIZZY’S CLUB COCA-COLA January 2014 Artist lineup
New York, NY (December 5, 2013) – Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola kicks off 2014 with performances by Guggenheim Fellow Kenny Werner, groups led by current and former Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra members Vincent Gardner, Wessell “Warmdaddy” Anderson and Herlin Riley, legendary saxophonist and composer Benny Golson,and experimentalists Jessica Jones and Amina Claudine Myers.
Other highlights include the return of The Cookers,featuring jazz veterans Billy Hart, Cecil McBee, Eddie Henderson, David Weiss, Billy Harper, and George Cables; a special one-night-only performance of “Ladies Sing The Blues” with Catherine Russell, Charenee Wade, and Brianna Thomas; and a Salute to Cedar Walton led by co-music directors Michael Mwenso and Evan Sherman. Kenny Werner Quintet
Pianist-composer Kenny Werner is a gifted pianist, composer, and music producer. During his career, Werner has worked with many of the most highly respected jazz musicians, among them Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Lee Konitz, Joe Henderson, Marian McPartland, Dave Douglas, Charlie Haden, and Rufus Reid. For these concerts, he is joined by Randy Brecker, trumpet; David Sanchez, tenor saxophone; Scott Colley, bass; and Ari Hoenig, drums.

Wessell “Warmdaddy” Anderson Sextet
Alto saxophonist and former Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra member Wessell “Warmdaddy” Anderson returns to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola with a mix of soulful New Orleans jazz and his sweeping blues style that evokes Cannonball Adderley.

Wednesday, January 8
Jessica Jones Quintet
The Jessica Jones Quintet performs experimental music derived from the jazz tradition and using structured original compositions that serve as a framework for freer improvisation. Bandleader and composer Jones plays tenor saxophone and piano. Among JALC’s most dedicated Middle School Jazz Academy instructors, she has worked with Joseph Jarman, Cecil Taylor, Steve Coleman, and Don Cherry, among others.

The Cookers
Jazz veterans, colleagues and kindred spirits Billy Hart, Cecil McBee, Eddie Henderson, David Weiss, Billy Harper, and George Cables are collectively known as The Cookers, taking their group name from a 1965 Blue Note album by the late, great trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. They bring the spirit of Hubbard’s pyrotechnic playing to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola for four nights.

Ladies Sing The Blues
with Catherine Russell, Charenee Wade, and Brianna Thomas
Following the sold out success of “Ladies Sing The Blues” at The Allen Room last October, the three outstanding vocalists join forces again for one-night only at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola to honor 1920s blues divas Bessie Smith, Mamie Smith, Ma Rainey, and Ethel Waters.

Salute to Cedar Walton
Co-Music Directors Michael Mwenso and Evan Sherman
Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola presents a salute to the late Cedar Walton (born January 17, 1934), “a pianist who distinguished himself as both an accompanist and a soloist, and who wrote some of the most enduring compositions in modern jazz…” (New York Times). Joining co-music directors Michael Mwenso and Evan Sherman for these special concerts are bassist Russell Hall and pianists Emmet Cohen and Gerald Clayton (January 18th only).

Tim Hagans Quintet
Grammy-nominated composer and trumpeter Tim Hagans is one of the most unique and influential voices in modern jazz. For this special concert, he gathers a formidable group of musicians that includes saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, guitarist Dave Stryker, bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Jukkis Uotila.

Vincent Gardner Sextet
Trombonist and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra member Vincent Gardner brings his sextet to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola for a brief residency. The sextet’s last release, Three-Five, was praised by All About Jazz for “delivering fresh, often intricate arrangements reimagining more familiar tunes”.

Benny Golson Quartet: Stories from the Past
Saxophonist and composer Benny Golson has played with Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, and Art Blakey, among many others. With trumpeter Art Farmer, he co–led The Jazztet, one of the most successful small groups of the early 1960s. For his weekend performances at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, he considers his illustrious past, revisiting his original material including all–time jazz classics “Killer Joe,” “I Remember Clifford,” “Along Came Betty,” “Stablemates,” “Whisper Not,” “Blues March,” and “Five Spot After Dark”.

Simona Premazzi: The Lucid Dreamer
A young Italian jazz pianist, Simona Premazzi’s third album The Lucid Dreamer explores “a complex, heavily rhythmic and idiosyncratic tradition that goes back to stride piano and runs through Thelonious Monk and Andrew Hill.” (New York Times) She makes her Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola debut this evening.

Champian Fulton Quartet
Pianist and vocalist Champian Fulton was praised as “the most gifted pure jazz singer of her generation” by Mark Stryker of the Detroit Free Press. A popular vocalist at Late Night Sessions, Fulton has also played with jazz masters such as Jimmy Cobb, Frank Wess, Lou Donaldson and Louis Hayes, among many others.

Amina Claudine Myers Trio
An influential member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), esteemed pianist, organist, vocalist, and composer Amina Claudine Myers makes her Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola debut. She performs with her long-standing trio of master musicians, bassist Jerome Harris and percussionist Reggie Nicholson.

Gathering Call
