2013 Generations in Jazz Festival
Continues through October 8

New York, NY (September 4, 2013) – The Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival showcases an array of up-and-coming musicians alongside some of today’s most established jazz masters. The fourth annual festival, which began September 9, 2013, continues through October 8, 2013 and features a multi-generational array of jazz performers from 17-70 years of age. 

Celebrating the great legends of jazz while seeking to create new ones, the festival presents the full spectrum of jazz tradition. Patrons may use their Duane Reade awards card to receive $5 off cover charge during the Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival

October’s lineup also features much anticipated performances by Kenny Barron, Christian McBride, the Wilson, Rosnes, Washington Trio, Judy Carmichael, Ted Nash Big Band, Antonio Sanchez and more. Michele Rosewoman’s “New Yor-Uba”
New Yor-Uba integrates brass, saxophones, and a rhythm section (including some of today’s most creative performers) with a core of masters of Cuban folkloric music led by pianist and vocalist Michele Rosewoman.

Freddie Redd Shades of Redd
Presented by the New School for Jazz & Contemporary Music. Released in 1960, Freddie Redd’s Shades of Redd is one of a few recordings by the pianist-composer and undoubtedly his greatest. Redd revisits this seminal recording for this special set, taking on a mentoring role as he is joined by New School jazz students Uri Zelig and Alex Claffy.

Honoring Remarkable Women in Jazz
Featuring Kim Thompson and Sarah Elizabeth Charles

Five dynamic female musicians perform original compositions and those of trail blazing women in jazz, such as Dorothy Ashby and Betty Carter, for a show originally conceived to celebrate Women’s History Month and reprised especially for the Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz series.

Orrin Evans and the Captain Black Big Band

For three nights, Philadelphia pianist Orrin Evans harnesses the talent of young upstarts and elder statesmen for this cohesive large ensemble, the Captain Black Big Band. Scheduled to coincide with the Sun Ra Turns 100 celebration in the Allen Room on October 5th, the performances will be highlighted by new arrangements of classic Sun Ra tunes.

NEA Jazz Master and nine-time Grammy nominee, pianist Kenny Barron celebrates his 70th birthday with an exquisite repertoire of original music, including modern classics that spans his work with Stan Getz, Yusef Lateef, James Moody and Dizzy Gillespie.

Late Night Session
Scheduled at 11:30 every Tuesday through Saturday, Late Night Session features some of jazz’s most talented up and coming artists, with a special invited jam session. Hosted by vocalist Michael Mwenso, on Thursday and Saturday nights only.
