In Celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, Jazz at Lincoln Center Announces 2013 Nesuhi Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame Inductees

JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ANNOUNCES

2013 NESUHI ERTEGUN JAZZ HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES 

Wide Range of Jazz Appreciation Month Celebrations Include
Concerts at Frederick P. Rose Hall and “Taste of Jazz” Events In New York
and at Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha in Doha, Qatar

New York, NY   On the occasion of Jazz Appreciation Month, Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) announces Art Blakey, Lionel Hampton, and Clark Terry as the 2013 inductees into the Nesuhi Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame (NEJHF).  After gaining the majority popular vote cast by jazz fans around the world between March 6 and March 3, the newest NEJHF class with be inducted on June 4, 2013, in an induction ceremony at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, at JALC’s home, Frederick P. Rose Hall. Viewers can tune in via live webcast at jazz.org/live.

The NEJHF honors legendary artists or members of the jazz community based on his or her singular dedication and outstanding contribution to jazz.  To date, Jazz at Lincoln Center has inducted 39 members into the NEJHF and will continue to induct new members annually. This year’s inductees were nominated by a committee of select musicians and scholars and voted in by an international public vote open to jazz fans around the world. This year’s nominating committee includes Ed Berger, Bill Charlap, Connie Crothers, Stanley Crouch, Jon Faddis, Vince Giordano, Wynton Marsalis, Dianne Reeves, Phil Schaap, Loren Schoenberg, and Spike Wilner.  

The announcement coincides with Jazz Appreciation Month, which in 2001 was established by the U.S. Conference of Mayors to build awareness of and celebrate the rich heritage of jazz.  Since the launch, Jazz Appreciation Month has grown to include celebrations in all 50 states and more than 40 countries.
JALC will celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month with the following events throughout the organization’s performance hall in New York City, with partner Time Warner Center and at Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha in Doha, Qatar:

  • Kings of the Crescent City
    April 19-20:  Jazz at Lincoln Center, Broadway at 60th Street, New York, NY

    Jazz at Lincoln Center continues the 25th anniversary season with a celebration of the four founding fathers of jazz – Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton, and King Oliver – in a special concert event entitled Kings of the Crescent City   New Orleans-born Victor Goines, the superlative clarinetist-saxophonist with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra for the last two decades, leads an all-star ensemble including Marcus Printup and Kenny Rampton (trumpet), Chris Crenshaw (trombone), Don Vappie (banjo), Dan Nimmer (piano), Reginald Veal (bass), and Adonis Rose (drums), whose early immersion in the musical culture of the Crescent City directly informed their musical production throughout their brilliant careers.

  • Duke Ellington Festival
    April 18-27: Jazz at Lincoln Center, Broadway at 60th Street, New York, NY

    Jazz at Lincoln Center salutes one of the 20th century’s musical giants with the Duke Ellington Festival featuring performances by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Michael Feinstein, Kurt Elling, and more, in Rose Theater and The Allen Room The Duke Ellington Festival concerts and pre-concert discussions will spotlight the song and spirit of the inimitable Duke Ellington.   Visit jazz.org for more information.  
  • Taste of Jazz America
    April 25, 6-9:00pm: Time Warner Center, New York, NY

    Jazz at Lincoln Center is proud to collaborate with Time Warner Center to combine the music and food of our culture.  As the Vince Giordano and his band performs, chefs from Time Warner Center’s Restaurant and Bar Collection will present small plates inspired by the regions of the world’s greatest jazz festivals.

  • Taste of Jazz Doha
    April 25-26:  Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha, located in the St. Regis Doha, Doha Qatar

    St. Regis Doha and Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha welcome guests to the first Taste of Jazz event featuring two days of performances by the Willie Jones III Quintet featuring Renee Neufville and the Yosvany Terry Group, a 3-course menu and welcome drink for one special price.
