THE BLUES: CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE

THE ALLEN ROOM
MARCH 15-16, 2013

Who/What/When:
Jazz at Lincoln Center celebrates its 25th Anniversary season acknowledging the blues, the roots of jazz, with Grammy®Award-winning harmonica master Charlie Musselwhite on March 15th and 16th.  Raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Musselwhite launched his career within the fertile blues landscape of mid 60s Chicago and the San Francisco flower power-era.  He brings his still bourbon-smooth tenor voice and masterful blues harp commentary to The Allen Room, where he’ll undoubtedly uphold the Chicago Tribune’s assessment that “he defines the cutting edge in contemporary blues.”  The band consists of: Musselwhite (harmonica, vocals), June Core (drums), Mike Phillips (bass), Matt Stubbs (guitar).  This is the final performance in our 2012-13 Blues Series.

Musselwhite is currently enjoying global publicity with the brand new Ben Harper with Charlie Musselwhite release Get Up! on the Stax label, plus their world tour.  The explosive collaboration has them on the cover of the DownBeat March issue, as well as features with Esquire and the Wall Street Journal, to name a few.

As Musselwhite explains, “Blues is real music.  It’s from the heart.  It’s about life, it’s about good times and bad times with your buddy or your girlfriend.  It’s your comforter when you’re down.  It’s all-purpose music.  Blues will get you through life.  It’s a comfort.  It’s your buddy when things are good, so it’s always there for you.”  On this Jazz at Lincoln Center performance, he smiles, “I’ll tell you what, we’re gonna have a real good time and blow all the blues away and there won’t be nothin’ left when we get through!”
