JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER BRINGS EDUCATION PROGRAM TO SANTA BARBARA CITY COLLEGE
Grammy-Nominated Composer and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra Member Ted Nash appointed Artistic Director
of JALC-SBCC’s Intensive Summer Jazz Institute
New York, NY – (October 11, 2012) –Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) brings its jazz education program to Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) scheduled to take place in summer 2013 in conjunction with the music department at Santa Barbara City College (SBCC). The first year of this annual six-week program will run from June 17, 2013 through July 26, 2013. The jazz performance and education institute is led by Ted Nash, Grammy-nominated composer and alto saxophonist of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. The institute will feature an esteemed faculty of world renowned jazz musicians. The program is a product of a partnership between JALC Managing and Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis, Nash and multi-media artist Winnie Swalley.
The institute will focus on preparing students who are already advanced in their field for the professional world. It will not only help the students to develop technique, knowledge and experience, but will also encourage them to identify themselves by discovering their own personality, passion, and expression through the art of jazz. The curriculum will include improvisation, composition, arranging, small group ensembles, jazz history, yoga, weekly private lessons, and big band performances, as well as courses in career and business development and management. Students will work intimately with the faculty to perfect their craft and learn what it takes to play with one of the top jazz ensembles in the world. Throughout the summer, student and faculty ensembles will appear in public concerts.
Institute attendees will make up a core group of two big bands. The institute will provide meals and housing for up to 60 students and in addition will accept a limited number of commuter students from the Santa Barbara community. Students will be chosen by a panel of adjudicators from the faculty based off of unedited audition videos, personal statements, and letters of recommendation. Applications will be available on Saturday December 1, 2012 and will be due along with all supplemental materials by Thursday, January 31, 2013.

About Ted Nash
Grammy-nominated artist Ted Nash enjoys an extraordinary career as a performer, conductor, composer, arranger, and educator. Born in Los Angeles, multi-instrumentalist Nash’s interest in music started at an early age. He was exposed to music and encouraged by his father, trombonist Dick Nash, and uncle, reedman Ted Nash – both well-known studio and jazz musicians. Nash blossomed early, a “young lion” before the term became marketing vernacular. One of Nash’s most important associations is with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, as well as the adventurous Jazz Composers Collective. About Wynton Marsalis
Wynton Marsalis is an internationally acclaimed musician, composer, bandleader, educator and a leading advocate of American culture. He is the world’s first jazz artist to perform and compose across the full jazz spectrum from its New Orleans roots to bebop to modern jazz, and in April 1997 he became the first jazz artist to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize in music for his work Blood on the Fields, which was commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center. About the Music Department at Santa Barbara City College
The Music Department at Santa Barbara City College holds a history of great performance ensembles. The LunchBreak Big Band has won first place in their division at the Reno Jazz Festival on four occasions and was a finalist in the Next Generation Jazz Festival, part of the world famous Monterey Jazz Festival, in 2011 and 2012. The jazz ensembles at SBCC have performed alongside many jazz legends, including Clark Terry, Maria Schneider, Red Holloway, Gerald Wilson, Bob Mintzer, Plas Johnson, Bill Watrous, Bill Berry, Michael Brecker, Ted Nash and Alex Isles.
SBCC’s music program has been recognized internationally for the excellent preparation of students in classical, jazz and commercial music.
