JALC ENTERS 25TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON

NEW YORK, NY – September 17, 2012 – Today Jazz at Lincoln Center announced the institution’s first Digital Advisory Council (DAC), formed to provide insight and guidance on harnessing technology and social media for audience development, digital distribution of performances and educational products, and other institutional imperatives.
The inaugural members of the Council are:

  • W. Lance Conn, private investor.  Lance serves on several corporate and non-profit boards including Charter Communications and the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation.  From 2004 to 2009, he was president of Vulcan Capital which manages the investment portfolio of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.  From 1996 to 2003 he was a senior executive with America Online where he led the business development unit;
  • Adam Freed, COO of Etsy.  Prior to Etsy, Adam built Google’s international businesses, localizing and developing Google’s international products and online sales and operations, including setting up Google’s online advertising operations in London,  Paris, Hamburg, Tokyo and Sydney and establishing Google’s multilingual online operations center in Dublin;
  • Robert Kondrk, senior director, iTunes, Apple;
  • Marcus Mitchell, Engineering Director, Google.  Marcus works in the GeoCommerce product area focusing on payments products for buyers and sellers on the web and the global payments platform that underpins all of Google’s consumer commerce efforts, and with Google.org projects in New York.  Marcus is an advisor for Google’s initiatives to increase diversity in Computer Science and Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. from Caltech in Computation and Neural Systems;
  • Elizabeth Moody, Head of Partner Development for Music at YouTube.  Elizabeth focuses on business development generally and on managing relations with YouTube’s music partners, including record labels and music publishers of all sizes.   Prior to joining YouTube, Elizabeth was an attorney with Davis Shapiro Lewit & Hayes where she spent years offering business and legal advice to new and existing digital music services;
  • David Pakman, partner at Venrock investing in early stage internet and digital media companies.  Prior to Venrock, he served as CEO of eMusic.  In 1999, David co-founded Myplay, which introduced the “digital music locker” and was sold to Bertelsmann in 2001.   David is a former member of the Board of Overseers at University of Pennsylvania’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, and an alumnus.

“As our 25th anniversary season begins, there are more outlets for audience development, education and outreach than have ever existed,” said Managing and Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis.  “We are fortunate to have such a distinguished group of elite digital media thinkers and doers willing to lend their time and expertise to furthering our work bringing people together through swing. They demonstrate, in their fields, the type of high virtuosity and creative intensity that the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra strives for in music.  We’re excited to welcome these diverse talents to join our quest to uplift our culture, country and kids through America’s music.”

Among other initiatives harnessing technology to build and engage audiences, JALC aims to: significantly expand its reach with performances webcast from its home, Frederick P. Rose Hall, “The House of Swing” (consisting of the Rose Theater, the Allen Room, and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola); bring its nonpareil archive of 25 years of performances (including over 1,500 compositions by some of jazz history’s greatest composers) and educational programs to global audiences; and build its membership to ensure JALC can activate a global community to advocate on behalf of jazz artists and venues worldwide.

About Jazz at Lincoln Center
The mission of Jazz at Lincoln Center is to enrich, entertain and expand a global community for Jazz through education, performance and advocacy.

We believe that Jazz is a metaphor for Democracy:

  • Because jazz is improvisational, it celebrates personal freedom and encourages individual expression;
  • Because jazz is swinging, it dedicates that freedom to finding and maintaining common ground with others; and
  • Because jazz is rooted in the blues, it inspires us to face adversity with persistent optimism.

With the world-renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and guest artists spanning genres and generations, Jazz at Lincoln Center produces thousands of performance, education, and broadcast events each season in its home in New York City (Frederick P. Rose Hall, “The House of Swing”) and around the world, for people of all ages.  Jazz at Lincoln Center is led by Chairman Robert J. Appel, Managing and Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis, and Executive Director Greg Scholl.  Please visit us at jazz.org.
